No Lease signed. All documents provided. Dubious Landlord.
My landlord is bit of a jerk. He doesn’t respect tenant rights or laws. Shows up to the house unannounced or without giving any prior notice. When questioned about it he says he’s just visiting the basement (We are not supposed to use the basement except for laundry). It is his basement. I am renting a room in his 5 bedroom house. I have provided him all my documents prior to move in to include me in the existing lease. I was not added till date (Almost three months now).
He showed up to the house this week unannounced and noticed some people in the house were indeed using his basement for partying and caused some damage. He then proceeded to inspect the whole house and found some issues. He’s now asking all the tenants to pay for the damages. These are the things I have absolutely no participation or awareness in. Even when I moved in I did the movin inspection only for the room I am renting. When I let him know that I do not want to take responsibility for others actions, he’s tells me that I’m a part of joint household with shared responsibilities. I made him clear that I would not be paying a dime for the damages. He wants to add me in his lease next month but I’m not ready to stay 12 more months with this landlord. I intend to stay for atleast 6 more months but without any of his surprise visits, persistently calling me and talking for 60+ minutes. I just moved from out of province and I don’t want to move to an another property as this is the 2nd house I’ve been in 3 months. Do I have a right to refuse signing any form of lease and continue living here month to month?
