What makes a good Cisco Packet Tracer lab for college networking courses?

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in learning what instructors value most when creating Cisco Packet Tracer assignments. I've been building network topologies that include detailed documentation covering network objectives, configurations, verification commands, troubleshooting guidance, and explanations of why each configuration is used.

For those who teach networking courses:

  • What types of labs do students struggle with the most?
  • What documentation do you wish accompanied Packet Tracer files?
  • If you could outsource the creation of Packet Tracer labs, what would you expect them to include?

I'm looking to improve the quality of the materials I'm creating and would appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks!

For Those Who Want To Advance Their Networking Skills

Good afternoon, everyone!

I've been putting together a Cisco Packet Tracer challenge set focused on BGP to help people practice beyond simple configuration examples. The goal is to give learners preparing for the CCNA or anyone interested in BGP a chance to troubleshoot and build confidence through hands-on exercises.

I'd really appreciate feedback on the content, difficulty, and overall learning experience. If you're interested in taking a look, here's the link:

What I Have Been Practicing

I've been constructing BGP practice projects to explore how autonomous systems exchange routing information. What BGP concept did you find the most challenging when you were learning it?

Built a BGP Practice Topology in Cisco Packet Tracer Using AI Assistance

Hi everyone,

I've been practicing BGP configurations in Cisco Packet Tracer and decided to experiment with Netpilot.ai to help generate a practice topology.

The topology includes multiple routers configured with BGP peering relationships, and I'm using it as a learning exercise to better understand:

  • BGP neighbor establishment
  • Route advertisement
  • AS numbers
  • Network statements
  • Route propagation between autonomous systems

My goal isn't to replace learning the concepts, but rather to use AI to create scenarios that I can configure and troubleshoot myself.

For those who have used AI tools for networking studies:

  • Have you found them useful for creating lab ideas?
  • What BGP scenarios would you recommend practicing?
  • Are there any common mistakes beginners should watch out for?

I'd appreciate any feedback or suggestions on how to make the lab more realistic.

Thanks!

Do Any Instructors Need Help Creating Cisco Packet Tracer Labs for Their Networking Courses?

Hello everyone,

I'm a networking student with experience creating Cisco Packet Tracer topologies, troubleshooting scenarios, and instructional lab exercises.

I was wondering if any instructors or professors here have challenges creating Packet Tracer activities for their classes. I'm interested in learning what kinds of labs are most useful in networking education and whether there are common pain points when designing assignments.

For example:

  • Introductory routing and switching labs
  • VLAN and trunking exercises
  • OSPF and static routing scenarios
  • Network troubleshooting activities
  • Multi-site enterprise network simulations

I'd be interested in hearing about your experiences and what types of Packet Tracer projects students find most valuable.

Thanks!

I created an OSPF Packet Tracer cheat sheet and practice challenges for beginners

Hey everyone,

I've been working on a Cisco Packet Tracer resource for beginners who want to learn OSPF configuration without spending hours digging through documentation.

I just published an Etsy digital download that includes:

• An OSPF implementation cheat sheet
• 2 Packet Tracer OSPF challenges for practice
• Step-by-step guidance to help reinforce the concepts

It's not a video course—it's designed more as a practical reference and hands-on learning resource.

I created it because I noticed many learners understand the theory but struggle when they actually have to configure OSPF in Packet Tracer.

I'd love to hear any feedback from the networking community. If you're interested, here's the link: https://myciscochallenges.etsy.com/listing/4509279159/how-to-implement-ospf-in-cisco-packet

(If the link is removed, DM me to receive the product.)

Thanks!

Need help understanding BGP in Packet Tracer? I can help

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working a lot with BGP configurations in Cisco Packet Tracer (multi-AS setups, route redistribution, policy control, etc.), and I know how confusing it can get when you're learning it for the first time.

If anyone here is:

  • stuck on a BGP lab
  • needs help building a project
  • or just wants a walkthrough of how BGP actually works

I’m happy to help explain things or even guide you step-by-step.

If you need something more in-depth (like a full project or custom lab), feel free to DM me and we can work something out.

Either way, I’m down to answer questions 👍

I had an experience helping my client and it was difficult. But I managed to help him configure OSPF in his project along with doing a little bit of documentation relating to it (as it was part of his assignment).

Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a lot of students struggling with Cisco Packet Tracer labs (VLANs, routing, ACLs, subnetting, etc.), so I wanted to offer help.

I’ve spent a lot of time working with Packet Tracer for CCNA-level labs and troubleshooting common issues like:

  • Devices not communicating
  • Misconfigured VLANs or trunk ports
  • Routing problems (static, RIP, OSPF basics)
  • Subnetting mistakes

I’m happy to walk through labs, explain configs, or help debug why something isn’t working.
This can be free for quick questions, or paid for more in-depth help—just depends on what you need.

If you’re stuck on an assignment and don’t want a copy-paste answer, feel free to comment or DM me.

My WhatsApp number is: + 1 (347)-832-8787 if anyone is interested in contacting me from there.
