A Labor of Love & Passion: Debuted Version 1.0 of my Eric Draven Cosplay at Motor City Comic Con.

*I apologize in advance; this is my first time ever posting on Reddit. I have another account that’s just been lurking for the past five years.

Kind of nervous to share this. For years I’ve wanted to take a swing at doing an Eric Draven cosplay. The Crow, like so many of you, is a film I hold near and dear to my heart. While I’m a ‘91 baby, I’d go so far as to say it played an integral part in my childhood/growing up.

When I do costumes, I tend to hyper-fixate on the most minute details. I truly want to make it appear as though the character stepped off the screen! For the past several years, around Halloween, I rent out a theater for family and friends; decorate the theater around whichever horror film I’m showing and ask certain friends if they wouldn’t mind being actors. I’ll try to provide everyone with screen accurate attire so it looks like the characters are truly there.

As the title suggests, this particular endeavor was a labor of love and passion that has been in the making for “years”. I finally decided to pull the trigger this year for Halloween 2026. This past weekend was Motor City Comic Con where I thought, what could possibly be a more perfect way to “debut”/test run it?

In no exaggeration, I spent countless of hours researching the film/looking at set photos, observing props and the various technologies used to create the look. I’ve been diligently working out in the gym to get a similar physique to Brandon Lee. (Pictured in the slide show was from a few years ago when I wanted to attempt this project sooner but, as stated, I talked myself out of it.)

While I had the physique, I then got the brilliant idea that instead of using the wig I had, I’ll just grow out my hair and dye it black. That put the project on hold for about another year…which, in retrospect, I believe was truly a blessing in disguise. When I finally attempted to diligently search both high and low for the “exact” brands used in the film, I had some incredibly beautiful interactions that made this project all the more memorable/special for me.

As many fans know, the coat used in The Crow was custom made. I reached out to a premium leather manufacturer who, truthfully, I had no business contacting; especially with something as “silly” as this. I had explained to them what I was doing and any information/help in guiding me would be greatly appreciated. I was met with the response below…

“Your passion and enthusiasm is incredibly infectious. If you’ll allow us the honor, we’d love to do right by you and appoint one of our craftsmen to create a handmade, near 1:1 replica of The Crow’s coat.”

What I received had me floored. In one of the photos you’ll see, to my surprise, they took the liberty of stitching on the inside of the jacket Eric’s famous words, “It Can’t Rain All The Time.” I’m not afraid to admit, I definitely got a little choked up when seeing that.

In a different facet, I was also determined to get the exact design for Shelly’s ring. I reached out to a jeweler in New York who specializes in custom rings. (Again, definitely had no business contacting an establishment with something like this but, to my surprise, I was met with the same response.) They were ecstatic to take on the challenge and help try to bring my vision to life. Unfortunately they wouldn’t be able to have it ready in time but that didn’t deter them. They ended up sending me a listing to an almost identical ring and told me to buy it. It was a Size 1 but they instructed to take it locally to a jeweler and have it resized. I was able to have it resized so I could alternate the ring from necklace to pinky like in the film.

Watching this project come together has been such a gratifying experience. I was really worried that I wouldn’t be able to live up to the expectations in my head/the vision I saw. As declared above, I wanted to make it seem like Eric Draven stepped off the screen and came to attend Motor City Comic Con.

The reception at Motor City Comic Con was overwhelmingly positive/so many people were stopping me for photos and inspecting the full costume. It was immensely gratifying getting the reactions of fans who just stared at me and kept voicing how uncanny/eerie it was that I looked just like Brandon Lee’s Eric Draven. I had a few people who showed they had gotten goosebumps standing next to me when having their photo taken.

While there are still a few things I need to tweak to get this 100% accurate…I am beyond elated and, while I definitely wrote a very wordy post to commemorate this venture, I am lost for words to a certain extent. I’d sometimes catch my reflection on the show floor and couldn’t believe how it looked as though Brandon Lee’s Eric Draven was looking back.

This honestly was one hell of a way to celebrate my birthday on the 16th. I could not be more happy with how Version 1.0 was received! I managed to drop nearly 60 lbs in a couple weeks time through high intensity workouts. I’m hoping to keep on this trajectory and land on 167 lbs come October. My friend wants to build their photography cosplay portfolio and is hoping to have a chance to shoot this.

Keeping in line with me hyper-fixating on the most minute details…we’ll be sure to photograph the costume in Detroit. This Halloween, I really hope to have successfully pulled off a near 100% screen accurate Eric Draven.

*Unfortunately, in the photos above, I took all of my pictures after I had worn the makeup, extensively, for nearly 11 hours. I included my initial test run/a video I took to study how the make up would react to movement.

For now, fingers crossed I’ve done right by this community/Brandon Lee in respecting the legacy and doing this cosplay justice.

Thank you so much for taking the time to check it out, as well as read my in-depth recounting of the past couple months. I appreciate it immensely.

Wishing you all, all the best.
