If Doctor Who returns, what tone should it have?

What the title says.

What tone should a new era go with?

Should DW go with a tone that's that's similar to big Netflix hits like Stranger Things and Wednesday.

Perhaps you would like to see DW go back to a more gothic horror tone, like the early Tom Baker years.

Or do you think DW should stick with the campy 'Yaas Queeeen' tone of the RTD2 era, do you want even more goblin songs and spaceships with bums that fart.

What do you think would work with audiences and make for a successful show?

What is your favourite Decade of Doctor Who to watch?

What the title says 🙂

What is your favourite Decade of DW to watch?

Is it the 70s, the 00s, or something else.

.......................................

Edit - Some observations:

No one has put the 2020s as their favourite decade.

70s DW is the most popular decade

The 80s has been said more than I was expecting (which is nice 🙂)

00s has been said less than I expected, with more people saying the 10s over it.

Why is Pike doing so little?

He hardly features in his own show, he seems to always just be in a few scenes, usually sitting down, where he has a heart to heart with another character who is working through something.. And that's that.

Why isn't he having adventures, why aren't we following him.

The show exists because people liked Pike in discovery.. Yet SNW has gone away from actually featuring Pike in a meaningful way and instead feels like a side character in his own show

Is it just me?

They waited until RTDs tv show was out until they announced his and Bad Wolf Studios departure, and the cancellation of the Xmas episode, do you think they are waiting until his book comes out to announce the show won't be going to tender and is shelved?

😱 Oh no

Could it be happening again.

Could the BBC be holding off the news that they haven't been able to get funding in place and so the tender process won't happen, until RTDs book is released in October, as a courtesy to him so he doesn't have to face all DW questions during his book promotion.

They held off the news about the Xmas episode being cancelled and RTD being out until his TV show was fully out.. The news dropped straight away afterwards, comically so.

The fact no news has come out about the tender process, and that it hasn't started after 2 months of announcing the intention (unheard of), doesn't suggest good things.. Its the no news about the Xmas episode all over again, potentially

Is history repeating!

If Doctor Who doesn't go out to tender due to lack of funding, what then?

If the BBC can't get funding in place and the tender process can't go ahead, the show is shelved.. What happens then?

What does the BBC do with the brand when the show is over.

Do you think there will be a push on the Book range, with a new line of books, who would it follow, would they make Pipers Doctor (🤮) the main line Doctor or would they have 14 leave Donna's garden and have him be the main line Doctor.

Would the BBC continue to allow Big Finish to make audios, or could the BBC look at possibly doing their own audios in house if there is money to be made there. Probably unlikely though... But would the Big Finish audios carry on the story post The Reality War, and what Doctor would they use.

Could Doctor Who have it's own comic book, not one just part of DW magazine (which is likely to go under, what with the show off air not helping and it being a obsolete medium), and that carries on the story, along with novels.

I think any hope for having some DW games are dead.

And of course we know we will get a kids show for cbbc in 2027/2028.

The Ncuti and Piper Doctor is the splinter from the actual Doctor that becomes the Valeyard

What the title says

The real Doctor is still currently chilling out in Donna's garden for some nonsensical reason 🤷 but once he finishes with that he gets back to travelling in time and space like the Doctor should, eventually gets mortally injured and regenerates, and if the show ever comes back then that's the next Doctor we see.

The splinter from the Doctor, which is what the bi-regeneration was, well that splinter Doctor (Ncuti-Piper) goes more and more insane, as it starts to burn through regenerations at a fast rate, and eventually realises it has no regenerations left, as it's more limited due to being a splinter and not a fully formed Time Lord/Doctor, in it's final Incarnation it takes on the name of the Valeyard, and it tries to steal the real Doctor's regeneration ability, as it has to be the Doctor's as that's where the Valeyard splintered from.

Same things are being said like last time.. Why Doctor Who might not come back

I thought this video I came across was a interesting one about the current state of DW, and why it is very possible the tender process won't happen.

The same things are being said now that we're said in 1989 and early 1990s

Lack of Cars on the map - What's the point of buying car skins if we can't use them.

This doesn't sound good, will the tender process actually happen?

This interview with Chris Chibnall is interesting, and a more level headed sensible look at things rather than the 'of course it's not cancelled, it's guaranteed lots more years' rhetoric from RTD.

If the BBC can't get funding in place then the show is not going to go out for tender.

Note it's been 2 months since the BBC announced the intention of putting the show out to tender, it recently announced Silent Witness too and that went out to tender in 3 weeks.. Usually everything that's announced to go to tender does so within a month...

Are the BBC struggling to get DW to the tender process, perhaps it's just not viable.

I don't think this show is out of the woods, it's future is far from guaranteed.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if later in the year the bbc announce they have taken the decision to not take DW foward, due to the inability to properly fund it.

And I'm sure people will cry foul that the BBC announced it and they wouldn't go back on what they said.. Well they announced the Xmas episode and look how that went, it's not impossible for the BBC to scrap a announced plan.

Hopefully the BBC can make things work, and we get a new era of the show, but I think it's clearly on shakey ground at the moment as to if that will happen.

Why is Pike sidelined so much in his own show?

Another episode where Kirk overtakes the show..

Kirk has his show, it was the original one.. SNW is emant to be Pike, that's why the show exists in the first place because people liked this version of Pike, and yet they keep sidelining him..

Does anyone else find this odd?

So when are the BBC going to actually start the tender process?

They have only announced that they will put it out to tender, but have yet to actually do it.

When they do officially put it out we can read what the bbc want from the companies that will pitch for it.

Its been well over a month, closer to two, now since they announced their intention to put it out to tender, when do you think that it will be released?

And what's the hold up? Surely the bbc would want to get on with things, and get it out there for production companies to make their pitches and go through the whole process (that can take half a year) of narrowing down the options, and ultimately working out a deal.

How would you feel if the BBC retconned The Reality War, and uploaded a new version without Billie Piper to replace the original version

What the title says

How would you feel if the BBC released a new version of The Reality War, which took the place of the original version on iplayer, that has the Regeneration into Billie Piper removed and instead just has a fade to black when Ncuti begins to change.

Would you like that, or would you dislike it.

Do you think if would be better for the show, or is it blasphemous to change a aired episode and pretend the Piper moment never happened.

Give your thoughts and insults below.

It is going to be Pete McTighe and BBC Studios isn't it

The BBC are going to choose the safe and easy option, like they have done for the previous two eras...

And it will be the same result as the Chibnall and RTD2 era all over again, where we get a uninspired take on Doctor Who and not the creative overhaul it needed

I find this impossible to do, and crosses that line that I think games should never cross, where it stops being fun and is just a slog to try and do.

This is the longest we have gone without a Doctor Who episode since 2005

Anyone getting withdraw symptoms 😜

After it was said we would be getting back to yearly seasons we have now gone longer than ever without a episode.

If they came up with the Xmas episode idea at a party in October 2025, what on earth was happening before then?

So it's been said that RTD and the other producers came up with the idea of doing the Xmas episode 'as a bridge' during a party in October 2025..

And this was, potentially, thought up to dodge the 'what's happening with DW' questions during the the War Between press tour..

But if that was the case then what on earth was happening before then? Season 2/series 15 with the Piper ending went out in May of 2025, what was going on behind the scenes between May and October, was no thought or movements going on about the future of the show at all..until a party where they go 'hey we should do something with this important brand to the bbc'..

I mean come on that doesn't add up, it doesn't make sense to me...

Same with the notion that Richard Osmond talked about that the bbc originally planned to put DW out to tender in 2028 or 2029, then later this was moved up... But why would that have been so late in the first place, if DW is such a important brand why would they sit on it for years and then put it out to tender, rather than just put it out to tender straight away (like what is supposed to be happening now)..

... I don't know all the stuff that's been said about what's being going on behind the scenes with the show just doesn't seem to add up to me, it doesn't really make sense.. Like we are not getting the true picture of what's been going on.

Empire of Death script had 'There is Always a Twist at the End' playing during Sutekh's defeat

In the script for Empire of Death the Doctor was meant to of said to Ruby that when facing a god you get one song, and runs over to the jukebox with a coin and puts it in, he then runs over to Sutekh as Sutekh is being pulled through the vortex and goes 'if there is one thing I've learned, there is always a twist at the end' and the song starts blasting out, but a more operatic version..

This isn't a joke, this was in the script.

I mean we need to see this masterpiece, why were we denied..

That's why I think we need a fan movement to get this cut released, if DC fans can get a Snyder version of a movie released we can get the There Is Always a Twist at the End cut released

So the Press release after The Reality War was just full of BS?

Remember the press release after the airing of the Reality War:

*In a press release, the BBC said: "Just how and why she [Billie Piper] is back remains to be seen…"

The credit at the end of the programme said: "Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper".

In a statement, Piper said she was delighted to be returning to the show, but that fans would have to "wait and see" what her character did next.

The new doctor has usually been introduced on the show through regeneration, but Piper's statement does not make it clear whether she will be the 16th doctor.

Piper said she has always wanted to return to the "Whoniverse"

If confirmed as the new Doctor, Piper will be the third woman to have played the role, following Whittaker and Jo Martin.

Piper added: "It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn't refuse, but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see."

Moments after the series finale aired, Piper shared a series of photos on Instagram, including two selfies of her holding a white rose and two of her playing the character Rose. The caption under the photos read: "A rose is a rose is a rose !!!"

Doctor Who showrunner and head writer Russell T Davies said: "Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again!

"It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the Tardis, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told.

"After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!"*

- So yeah, this is quite something considering there apparently was no actual plan for the Xmas episode and it then got cancelled.

It's unfortunate that what will be remembered as the most memorable moment of the Ncuti Gatwa era is him turning into Billie Piper at the end

The one iconic moment of the Ncuti Gatwa era, and iconic for all the wrong reasons, is Ncuti turning into Billie Piper at the end.

That will be the most remembered thing about the era in the eyes of the general public.

A desperate stunt that went no where. That moment is what most people will talk about when discussing the era.
