Hi everyone,

I recently got accepted into a PhD program with a scholarship in Italy. Currently, I hold a Permesso per Ricerca Lavoro (job-seeking permit) after completing my previous studies here. I sent my application kit and had my fingerprinting appointment at the Questura, but the officer told me they cannot convert Attesa Occupazione back into Studio. The university checked with the Prefettura, and they also stated I must return to my home country and re-apply for a new student visa.

My questions:

1. Extension of current permit: Is it legally possible to extend my  Ricerca Lavoro (without converting it to any other type of permit) and continue my PhD studies while holding it?
2. Alternative conversion (Permesso per Ricerca): Since I have been awarded a PhD scholarship, can my status be converted into a Permesso per Ricerca or another research/work-based permit, rather than a standard Permesso per Studio?
3. Legal alternatives: Is returning to my home country truly the only remaining option, or is there any administrative procedure to resolve this while remaining in Italy?
