New VF 8 just launched in Vietnam — downgrade, or just VinFast's usual "base trim first" playbook? (10 official press photos)

VinFast revealed the next-generation VF 8 in Vietnam yesterday (May 20). Official press photos attached. Deposits open May 27, first deliveries end of July, 999M VND list (~800M after incentives).

The spec sheet has sparked a real debate, and I wanted to bring it here because I don't think the answer is obvious.

The case that it's a downgrade:

Compared to the current VF 8, the new one has a smaller battery (60 kWh LFP vs 87.7 kWh NMC), less power (228 hp FWD vs 349 hp AWD), no AWD option at all, slower charging (~100 kW vs ~150 kW peak), a shorter wheelbase (2,840 mm — identical to the VF 7), and a shorter warranty (7yr/160k km vs the old 10yr/200k km). Projected range drops to roughly 200-210 mi EPA-equivalent from the current car's 256 mi. On paper, almost every performance number moved down.

The case that it's something else:

VinFast has a consistent history of launching the cheapest, most basic version of a vehicle first in Vietnam, then adding trims and exporting upgraded specs later — that's how the VF 8, VF 7, and others rolled out. So this could just be the base trim, with a bigger-battery or AWD "Plus" coming later, rather than the whole story.

The case that the downgrades miss the point:

The new car is genuinely more modern underneath. It's VinFast's first fully in-house platform with a centralized "Software Defined Vehicle" architecture (single central vehicle computer), OTA updates in ~15 min instead of ~75, an expanded ADAS suite, a patented integrated thermal management system, and CarPlay/Android Auto standard. LFP chemistry also means better cycle life and safe daily 100% charging. And it's priced as one of the most accessible D-segment SUVs in Vietnam.

So which is it? A cost-cut, a predictable base-trim-first launch, or a smart re-prioritization toward architecture and price over raw specs? I genuinely think there's a case for all three, and probably the truth is some mix.

Curious what this community thinks — especially current VF 8 owners. Does the newer platform and lower price outweigh the spec reductions, or does losing AWD and range matter more?

I help run the Association of VinFast Owners (AVO), an independent, owner-run community for VinFast owners across North America — not affiliated with VinFast. We've been digging into this launch in detail (spec comparisons, the VF 7 platform overlap, what a US version might look like). If you want to go deeper on this discussion or connect with other owners, the AVO Discord link is in the comments. Everyone's welcome, whether you own a VinFast or are just following the brand.

6 Headphones Purchased 5 Returned.

The Headphones:
Sound Core Space 2
Beats Studio Pro
Bose QuietComfort (non-ultra)
Logitech Zone 950
Sony ULT
AirPods Pro 3

My requirements:

  1. Decent audio after setting the EQ to what sounded best to me... I have no clue why Out of the Box is even talked about. If the Headphones have an EQ App. I use it first before judging any headphones. I judged decent audio on do I perceive any distortion in a frequency range. Were any instruments lost by the headphones.

  2. Good Call quality on Video Conferences and phone calls

  3. Comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Soundcore
Decently comfortable. they miss the bass response in The Wknd song The Hills. also miss some of the harmonizing voices. Not bad for voice calls. Decent app though. ANC is Meh. Bit of a high pitched sound from the ANC when removing them from your head. sort of a slight mic feedback sound.
(Returned)

Beats Studio Pro
Heavy and the depth of the cushions is not enough for even my GFs small ears. Ok call quality. Sounded muffled and a bit flat playing NIN Hesitation Marks. Also almost seemed to cut out the Bass in The Hills. USB-C Lossless Audio let me down big time. They honestly are not better sounding plugged in via USB, 3.5, or bluetooth. There is a bit less hiss/hum but the frequency response remains flat and lifeless. No dedicated app, and not much is configurable. Decent ANC. (side note are these weighted with lead ingots to create a 'premium' feel?)
(Returned)

Bose QuietComfort (non-ultra)
Best Frequency response. Not as great as $500+ Sennheiser or the Sony XM6; yet, honestly pretty good. More comfortable for long wear than my wired Sennheisers and than the Sony XM6s. Second Best call quality performance of this round up. Best ANC
(Keeping these as my daily)

Logitech Zone 950
Freaking ouch painful to wear. Outstanding call quality, decent ANC, and the audio honestly pretty good frequency response. Yet, These suckas are painful to wear. they sit on your ears with extra clamping force.
(Un-returnable so they are a backup that I will leave at the office, though I would honestly drive back home to get the bose if I forgot them.)

Sony ULT
Yeah, definitely not XM4,5, or 6 Quality. Frequency response is like a canyon. All lows and highs with no middle. Ok comfort similar to the XMs. Ok ANC maybe tied for second best of this crop.
(Returned)

AirPods 3
Im concerned by their ANC, some sounds cause a clipping sound that seems harsher than the sound it is trying to NC. I am a fan of their ease of use and they work great in the apply ecosystem. Not great frequency response compared to Bose QCs but that is to be expected as an over the ear is just going to be richer sounding.
(Kept for occasional use)

Ask questions.

My dailys are now:

Bose QuietComfort (non-ultra) Music and Video Calls
Shokz Open Run or Beats Flex (situation dependent mostly spoken word less for music) either of these are on me at all times.
