2024 Ranger Raptor Turbo Blew Up
Edit: Thanks to those who actually gave some advice and thoughts about what else could go wrong. I will be doing oil changes more frequently due to this and comments here. Now carry on with bickering about who knows more about oil changes and does them the most frequently on this forum.
TLDR: My 2024 Ranger Raptor blew a turbo while doing normal driving after less than 2 years of ownership and 12k miles. The dealer is replacing the turbo under warranty but refuses to do an oil change without paying out of pocket which seems absolutely absurd to me. Old oil through a brand new turbo?
Longe version: I bought my RR in Oct of 2024 with 5 miles on it and have loved it since. I did an oil change at exactly one year of ownership in Oct of 2025. When doing that oil change it took them 4-5 hours as they told me they didn’t have the oil filter (meanwhile I had made an appointment weeks in advance). Part of me doubts if they did the oil change properly as it may have caused the following issue.
I also had the Ford Performance Tune done on the vehicle shortly after the oil change was completed. This was done entirely through the dealership.
Fast forward to a week and a half ago, I was out driving for maybe 30-45mins when I pulled out onto a road doing a left turn, heard a small hiss noise from the engine, then next thing I knew there was clouds of smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. I immediately pulled over and inspected the vehicle. A very large amount of smoke coming from the left exhaust outlet and oil dripping from the exhaust (tail pipe and the inner muffler portion). I of course had it towed to the dealership.
The dealership inspected the vehicle and simply told me they just need to replace the turbo as the turbo failed and broke internally. To me, this seems way too simple for what is going on. I asked about other potentially damaged parts including the intercooler and the exhaust system (catalytic converters and the sensors). Those should also be, at a minimum, inspected especially due to the amount of oil that has gone through the exhaust. They did not say much about that. The kicker is I also asked about an oil change to which they stated “well that’s not part of the warranty, would you be willing to pay out of pocket?” To which I stated no and that they need to escalate that to a manager. Running old oil through a new turbo seems like putting a dirty oil in a new engine. Isn’t there a break in period?
Side note: Part of me is tempted to let them be negligent about the repair as it is still under warranty and lemon laws. My last new car (MK5 Supra) ended up being a lemon with a simple electric issue and this seems 5x worse.
Any advice or thoughts are appreciated. I’m sorry to post a sad story in this forum as I’m sure you all are enjoying the truck as much as I was….
