[update/release] Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories Online + mobile demo

The interest (and hate) motivated me to button this up for an initial release. I even got a cool domain that may or may not get flagged for takedown lol:

Play now, no sign up required: https://yugioh.fm

Note that this is still under development, bugs expected (especially in multiplayer). Please utilize the report bug feature in settings menu during the game to get them fixed.

What is this?

An online-enabled remake of the game. Rebuilt and extended.

Runs in the browser, with a tailored mobile experience. Tried to make it as easy as possible to get into a game, which includes a first-class guest system. One thing to note is that guest progress is kept in your browser, so you'll need to keep track of your backup code if you want to play on a different browser and ensure you don't accidentally wipe it.

Campaign doesn't feature the story, just broke the opponents into acts w/ progression mimicking how you would end up fighting them in the original game. Not sure when or if I'd want to tackle the story element.

All cards, drops, rules, NPC behavior profiles, etc, are of course modeled after the original game.

Content additions

I've added a few net-new cards to the game. A key factor in choosing them is that they fit the original game's simple art style. Any feedback on these or suggestions for future content additions is welcomed and appreciated.

  • New carries
    • I've added 7 additional "carries" to the game.
      • "Carry" meaning Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon-flavored, zero-to-hero fusions that can power your mid and late game.
    • My goal here is to enable more variety in gameplay, rather than requiring players to grind for dragons and thunders exclusively. You will encounter them pretty early in the campaign, I'd love feedback on how they land
    • Duel Master K can smack show you your deck's capabilities in Free Play
  • New chase cards
    • Some new rare cards that are made to rival those such as Meteor B. Dragon, Red Eyes B. Dragon, etc
    • Goal is to provide more replayability beyond farming lower meadow mage
  • New pseudo-type
    • Pseudo-type meaning a group of cards that has generic fusions with other groups of cards. e.g. female
    • Feeds into one of the new carries

Multiplayer

  • Room system where you can open a room or join someone else's to duel them. No traditional matchmaking at the moment.
  • Create private rooms to play with your friends via invite-only
  • Turns are timed to prevent stalling the duel. Timer counts down from 30s, and any action that progresses the duel resets it. e.g.:
    • Rotating a card to defense does not reset the timer, since this does not progress the duel
    • Deploying a card, attacking, using a magic card, etc does reset the timer, since this progresses the duel
    • Open to feedback and tuning
  • Ante system
    • When hosting a multiplayer duel, you can set an ante amount, from 5 to 1000 star chips
    • Both players bet this amount of chips, winner takes the pot
    • Goal is to provide incentive to duel each other, as well as make the card shop more useful without making 999,999 chip cards easily accessible

AI

The industry has shifted to a state where AI tooling usage can be expected in every piece of software on the planet, for better or for worse. A key thing to note is that there are zero AI generated assets in this project.

Everything you see was designed by a human. Any AI generated code is reviewed by a human, and tested by a human. Sources include:

  • Original game assets, programmatically upscaled (most of the gameplay)
  • Open source assets made by real people, modified to fit into the game (credited)
  • Components styled in code

The line for AI-assisted and AI slop differs from person to person, imo this project is the former. I have been working on this for a while and put a lot of thought into it. If you disagree, I don't really care.

On my to-do list

  • Matchmaking/ranked (if there is demand)
  • Trading system
  • Better card drops (packs?) for wins
  • Leaderboards
  • Maybe remaster some effects. I had a lot of fun working with open source 3D models, I prototyped putting a realistic black hole rendering in place of the current Dark Hole effect
  • Achievements/any sense of "I did it" after the campaign is completed. Currently just ends.

A true to source (ish) remake of my beloved YGO: FM. Gameplay attached.

Already a lot of these fan game style posts lately, but thought y'all might want to see anyway! I've worked on an online-enabled remake of this game on and off for quite some time, but recently decided it's coming together well enough to share with those who might be interested.

I am trying to pay close attention to detail in order to make this as true to the source material as possible, except for where it can be reasonably improved without changing core gameplay. (HUD, controls, etc)

Attached is some gameplay (not the best screen recording software, looks better when playing) vs Villager #1. It has a full mobile UI, but it doesn't seem like I can upload more than one video at once. Please excuse the awkward gameplay, I was focused on trying to figure out how to best showcase stuff lol

This is, of course, far from a finished product. However, If I were to setup a production environment, a beta release is totally doable.

It features campaign in the sense of "do these duels to unlock free play and progress", not sure when or if I'd want to take a stab at the actual story elements. Free Duel works just like the original. Multiplayer is setup, but currently just private duels via an invite code. In a world where there is interest in a full online experience, I'd love to work on matchmaking, ranked system, etc.

Built in three.js, so runs in the browser. Supports the concept of guests, so no sign up needed to play.

What do y'all think? Would you play it?
