Getting started

Hello. I’m trying to get into real estate photography. Have no experience so far, although I have been an active amateur photographer for several decades, mostly in relation to other interests.

Getting started seems to be a catch-22: Needing experience to get work, but needing work to get experience.

A few real estate photography YouTubers (mostly those selling courses) claim you can just start with the basics. In theory, maybe. But is this true in practice?

I spoke to a few realtors who seemed vaguely interested, but then nothing. (I know this takes time and persistence.) But their expectation seemed to be still images, video, drone, floor plans and virtual tours from day 1.

I was also thinking about trying to get some work for some established companies, and spoke to a few people who again seemed interested. But then they seemed to think that I should get my drone license ASAP and work on video, 3D tours, etc. If they want/need everything from the start, and they can offer work but while taking a cut, I wonder if it’s not just worth going it alone anyway?

So, is it possible to get started with only photography skills (and gear), but not the floorplans, drone, video, 3D tours?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice on this.
