Kurt’s Aunt Mary Passed Away This Past June. She Should Be Remembered For Her Instrumental Role In Kurt’s Musical Journey. RIP Aunt Mary!

From Facebook -

In June 2026, Mari Earl, Kurt Cobain’s aunt, passed away, leaving behind a story that forms part of the earliest chapters of the life of Nirvana’s legendary frontman.

But Mari was more than just his aunt. She was also one of the people who were close to Kurt when his passion for music was only beginning to awaken.

When Kurt was just two years old, Mari recorded him singing songs by The Beatles and The Monkees. From an early age, music was part of his world, and she had the opportunity to witness those first moments when he began discovering his passion.

Mari also helped nurture that passion from his childhood. She allowed him to play her own guitar when he was little, and as the years passed, she opened the doors of her home so he could rehearse and record music. There, in December 1985, Kurt and Dale Crover of the Melvins recorded several songs with Fecal Matter, the musical project that preceded Nirvana.

Years later, when recalling those sessions, Mari humorously described how Kurt’s voice echoed throughout the house as he recorded. She and her husband would even joke about whether they should close the windows so the neighbors wouldn’t worry that someone was being mistreated.

But her memories also held a much more emotional side.

When Nirvana achieved fame and Mari saw her nephew on MTV, she was moved to tears. To the world, Kurt had become a rock star; to her, he was still her nephew, the young man with whom she shared a special connection through music.

Mari also reflected on how difficult it could be for Kurt to share his songs. She understood his artistic sensitivity and how important it was for him to protect what he created.

Long before the big stages, Nevermind, and millions of people knowing his name, Mari had known Kurt at a time when everything was just beginning.

She was there when music was still a dream starting to take shape. And years later, she witnessed that dream lead her nephew to a level of fame that would change his life forever.

Today, as we remember Mari Earl, we also remember the people who were part of Kurt’s story before the world knew him.

🕊️ Rest in peace, Mari Earl. Thank you for being part of those early chapters of a story that will never be forgotten. 🖤

AND PERSONALLY, THERE’S SOMETHING I TAKE AWAY FROM THIS…

Mari recalled that she and Kurt shared a special connection through music. She witnessed his first steps as a singer, gave him one of her guitars, and opened the doors of her home so he could experiment and record with Fecal Matter.

Years later, when she saw him achieve success on MTV, she couldn’t hold back her tears.

Sometimes, the most precious memories don’t belong to the big stages, but to those little moments we share with the people we love. Mari was part of Kurt’s first steps in music, and that mark will remain forever in Nirvana’s history. 🖤🕊️

Not sure where this photo is from, maybe from the recording sessions of “Houdini”?

Apparently George W. Bush Wasn’t A Fan Of “In Utero”.

As per Noisy -

“Before he was president, George W. Bush was just a typical, conservative ’90s dad. So much so that his daughter Jenna Bush Hager once recalled him breaking a classic grunge album CD over his knee when he caught her with it. (Spoiler alert: it was In Utero by Nirvana.)

During a 2019 episode of the Today show, Hager and Carson Daly were chatting about parenthood and music. The former MTV host was lamenting how difficult it was to let his kids listen to music because of adult themes and foul language.

“My dad was always so good about letting us listen to music we wanted to,” Hager chimed in. She quickly clarified, however, “I mean he did, and he didn’t…” The mother of three then shared a story from her younger years that has stuck with her.

“I went out with my money. I guess that I got from doing chores,” she said, “and I bought a Nirvana CD. It was one of my first.” She explained that “there was a really bad song on it” she couldn’t name on camera, and that it was “two words.” Together, Hager and Daly figured out that the album must have been In Utero. The logical conclusion here is that the song was likely “Rape Me“.

Daly joked that the “future leader of the world listening to you listen to that” must have been a wild experience. “My dad heard me playing it on my little Discman,” Hager recalled, and “he broke the CD over his leg.”

She added that her father was “never was mad like that. But this particular song” understandably triggered something in him when he heard his “little daughter” listening to it.

Hager joked that the story is kind of “funny” because other than that one instance, her father had no issue with her music. “When we would drive, he would let me, in our little minivan, put on the Green Day Dookie CD, and he would listen to it.”

Honestly, the Green Day thing is almost funnier. George W. Bush was the American President who was pretty much responsible for launching Green Day’s political activism. His presidency was the inspiration for their American Idiot album. So, to find out that he used to listen to Green Day with his daughter… that’s some hilariously bizarre coincidence.”

Photo Of The Kurt Cobain/Axl Rose Confrontation At The 1992 VMA’s

As per Erik Lievano’s FB post -

“The story behind this picture is legendary…. So in 1992 at the MTV VMA’s and I ran into Eric Clapton chatting with Annie Lennox backstage. I walked up to him and politely told him that my mom had named me after him after seeing Cream back in the day… So while chatting with Clapton and Annie Lennox, Axl Rose came walking up and famously tried to pick a fight with Kurt Cobain… I happened to have a camera in my pocket and snapped it as it unfolded… What’s out of the frame on the left is Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Baby Frances, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) all sitting at their table hanging out while Axl Rose is threatening Kurt… Annie Lennox said “what a wanker” about Axl and I believe that other than the camera man Axl Rose had with him in this photo filming, my picture is the only one ever produced publicly of this legendary confrontation…”
