I've seen a lot of people saying " Gone are the golden days of merchant navy" ,what do they mean by this.

I’m currently in my final year of engineering and I have the option to sit for campus placements, including core/IT companies, or pursue an ETO career in the Merchant Navy. How would you decide between the two? In what situation would you choose ETO over a regular engineering/IT job, and vice versa?
