Bleach Baths

Well, after 2 years of Atopic Dermatitis Flares accompanied with repeated Staph infections, including Folliculitis, I’ve literally taken the plunge and started bleach baths.

I started Ciclosporin 2 weeks ago and because of my history I was concerned of my susceptibility to Staph infections, lo and behold, I had an outbreak of Folliculitis.

The Ciclosporin has worked absolute wonders for my Eczema and so I don’t want to stop treatment so before jumping the gun and having read about Bleach baths countless times during this past couple of years I’ve decided to take the plunge.

I’ve taken two baths in the past 24hrs, both times, zero adverse reaction on skin, in fact my skin is already looking so much closer to it’s normal tone than the consistent redness that never seems to go away.

I’ve also suffered a few fungal outbreaks during this time and having bounced between GP and Derm prescriptions and ultimately going around in circles I figured if there’s ever a time to try something that is going to tackle both bacteria and fungi/yeast simultaneously then now is the time to do it.

The folliculitis is already much less inflamed and irritable but I need to persist, hopefully over the next week or two I can finally get my skin clear and then move to a maintenance regime of Bleach bathing twice a week.

Hopefully this is the beginning of bringing this debacle to an end.

Cyclosporin Day 6.

Well, what can I say, skin/barrier sloughing whilst a big sign that your skin barrier is repairing itself is never pleasant to deal with, even more so when in the midst of an unprecedented heatwave in the UK.

I was supposed to start Ciclosporin on Monday last week, 15th June. However my TB test hadn’t been done during the blood test I had the week before, so went on Tuesday got bloods done again, all came back fine and derm prescribed Ciclosporin which I started taking on Saturday.

However, I had been on 3 courses of Prednisolone over a 3 month period due to massive Atopic Eczema flare ups all over my body and limbs, I also had a staph infection thrown in the mix so a 10 day course of antibiotics also featured during the back end of the 3 months.

Finally, with skin under control I take the last of the Prednisolone on Friday 12th June with Ciclosporin just around the corner.

Well, the delay to starting the Ciclosporin caused by the lack of TB result that then meant I required an additional blood test was enough time for the Prednisolone to fully leave my body and hold the door wide open for one hell of a rebound flare.

So although I was hoping to start cyclosporin with pretty clear skin, I was instead starting it in the midst of a massive flare that covered me from head to toe I had to ride it out whilst taking the cyclosporin knowing and hoping that it was only be a matter of days before the cyclosporin started to take effect.

I am pleased to say that over the past 48 hours the cyclosporin has started to take effect the inflammation is gradually using away and my skin barrier has entered one almighty sloughing phase.

Areas of my skin that had been red for months such as the top of my feet and lower legs has already returned to a normal skin tone, widespread areas that have become really inflamed during this rebound flare are easing and one really noticeable impact has been the lack of itchiness that comes with eczema, I’m not scratching, lesions that have existed for as long as 18 months are clearing up too.

All signs are that I’m on the road to a fresh start where I can put this behind me on the road towards Biologics.

Luckily for me, I have also not experienced any side effects from the Cyclosporin at all.

I will update again in a few days.

Finally trying MCT C8 Oil. So far the signs are positive.

Two years ago, at the age of 35, I started suffering full body Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) flares for the first time since the age of 10. During that time I’ve become accustomed to flare ups and then the dying/flaking off phase that occurs when your skin barrier sloughs off the damaged/dead skin.

During that time I also started suffering with dandruff in my scalp, beard and eyebrows, eventually my forehead, ears and cheeks got roped into it too and it was only over time when using GP prescribed treatments for my Eczema and the Seb Derm symptoms persisting combined with reading up and looking at people’s symptoms online and on this Reddit channel that I became convinced that I was now also dealing with Seb Derm in addition to the Eczema.

I’ve now been under dermatology since December, Phototherapy was a failure, I’m soon starting Ciclosporin for my Eczema with a view to moving onto Biologics once I reach the 4 month limit for Ciclosporin, during appointments with Dermatology I have pointed out that I suspect I have Seb Derm and they have checked and prescribed the usual Betnovate Scalp Applicator and Ketocanozole Shampoo which only brings about a short term clearing or reduction of symptoms.

After much due diligence, I took the plunge and ordered a bottle of MCT C8 Oil and Dropper Bottles with Pipettes for application direct to scalp, and then flew in the face of all that due diligence and applied copious amounts to my scalp and all over my face and ears on Friday night and then washed it all off in the shower on Saturday then repeated again on Saturday and showered off Sunday.

As someone who is accustomed to barrier sloughing, it came as no surprise at all that what prevailed roughly 12 hours after Friday’s first application and the following 24-36 hours was all of the effected areas flaking off substantially, I did have a bit of discomfort on the area above my right eyelid under my eyebrow, but this is a delicate area and therefore I just persevered.

I didn’t apply any on Sunday and then returned to work Monday so I have moved to a regime of applying the MCT C8 when I get home then showering it off before bed.

This morning I’ve noticed the sloughing has eased off substantially and my skin is looking the best it has in a while, there’s still a bit more improvement to be had but the persistent red patches have largely faded away to reveal a normal skin tone and I’m noticing a lot less itching which was particularly prevalent on my scalp.

Obviously, it’s still early days but the signs so far are very very positive, my hope now is that this can go on to be a long term solution for the Seb Derm and that with Dermatology I can find a long term solution to my Eczema as well, the past two years have been a nightmare, my self esteem and outlook on life has taken a battering, it’s impacted everything in my life to various degrees… may 2026 be the year this shit gets kicked into touch.

I will provide another update with regards to the MCT C8 Oil once I’ve allowed sufficient time to make another assessment of its effectiveness for me.
