Selling car in HI, never registered in HI, original registration from TX has been expired three years
To begin, yes, I know this is all very stupid on my part. I moved from TX to HI and shipped my car but never registered it in HI. 3 years later, I’d now like to sell my vehicle.
I can’t find my old TX registration. I could’ve sworn it was required to ship it here so I don’t know where it went. Do I need to ask TX for a copy of the one from 3 years ago to get things moving along with HI? Do I need to pay TX for the last 3 years of registration although the vehicle wasn’t there? I imagine I’d need to provide a TX-based inspection which I’m not going to ship my car back and forth over.
Or do I pay HI for the missing years of registration since it was present on island? Can they create a new registration for me without needing TX involved?
Can I sell to a dealership and they deal with all of this mess?
I’ve visited the DMV for assistance and they have sent a form to the lien holder/company I took out a loan for to purchase the car. It seems the title must be shipped to HI to have the state/address updated, and then shipped back to them.
Sorry to be all over the place—thanks for your time.
