Premed Options, UofM/WSU
Hi everyone, I'm currently a highschool senior in michigan graduating with an associates in science though dual enrollment and the MTA next year. (4.4 HS, 4.0 Community College, 1500 SAT, around 60 transferrable credits + APs) This would mean I'm entering as a 1st year, but will be a junior with 2 years left. I'm planning on premed through biochem major and was wondering if anyone could offer insight as to balancing prestige, difficulty and cost.
Current Options:
**Wayne State University**, Biochem major (with honors?) around 16k a year and commuting (30min) with 36.5% Pre MD to MD rate
**UofM Dearborn**, Biochem or Chem major around 12k a year and commuting (25min) with 63% Pre MD to MD/DO rate (seems inflated)
I've also looked at:
**UofM AA**, Biochem major, around 25k a year and commuting (30min) but more strict on credits transferred and generally harder to maintain great GPA. 58% Pre MD to MD rate
**MSU**, Biochem major, around 37k a year due to food and housing with 29.5% Pre MD to MD
Regarding extracurriculars after HS, I'm continuing to give music lessons at my highschool (around 3 hours a week) as well as planning on volunteering at a local hospital 8 hours a weekend starting this summer. My community college offers phlebotomy so I will be attending those classes to get my certification after winter semester next year.
Overall,
How much does prestige matter for premed if GPA is strong?
Between WSU and Dearborn, are there any advantages one has over the other?
I prefer to save money and stress for med school but would AA have any disproportionate advantage over the others?
* note, not trying to ask whether or not I'd make it in each college but rather which would be recommended for med school applications.
Thank you guys!
