Comment your state name to set your user flair

User flair is a text that appears below your username in your comments and posts shared in a subreddit.

As this is India specific postcard subreddit, we are giving state as the user flair. If you're from another country participating in this subreddit - comment your country name instead of an indian state.

This subreddit has members from across India and it helps identify others that you're from a certain state in India. Its wholesome feeling to see people from all over india doing this hobby and the flair would also help identity a fellow person from your state.

This is not mandatory and we're doing this mostly for making the process of setting user flair easier. Please only comment if you want to set a user flair. If you already have a user flair, commenting will overwrite your existing user flair.

👋 Welcome to r/PostcardIndia

Hello and welcome!

Postcard India is a community for postcard lovers in India, people who send, receive, collect, or are simply curious about postcards.

Why this community exists

If you’re new to sending postcards from India, you’ve probably faced at least one of these problems:

  • No clear information on postage rates
  • Different answers from different post office employees
  • Being told to use more stamps than required
  • Wasting money through trial and error
  • Feeling unsure whether your postcard will even reach

Many people go through this confusion. Some figure it out slowly.
Some get discouraged and give up altogether.

There has never been a dedicated space for postcard enthusiasts in India where these questions can be asked openly and answered clearly, with India-specific context.

That’s the gap this community is meant to fill.

What this subreddit is for

This is a place where you can:

  • Ask basic questions without hesitation
  • Learn correct postage, formats, and practices for India
  • Share your trial-and-error learnings so others don’t repeat them
  • Discuss sending postcards within India and internationally
  • Share incoming / outgoing postcards
  • Offer, request, and exchange postcards with other Indians.
  • Talk about stamps, designs, ideas, routes, delays, and experiences
  • Connect with others who enjoy slow mail in a fast world

The Indian postcard community is small and scattered.
This space is an attempt to bring those people together in one place.

For newcomers

If you’re just starting out:

  • No question is too small
  • There is no “stupid” postcard question
  • Many here learned the hard way, you don’t have to

If something is confusing, ask.

For experienced senders

If you’ve learned through experience:

  • Your knowledge matters
  • Your answers can save others time and money
  • Please share what actually works in practice

This community grows through shared experience, not authority.

A small note on tone

Please keep conversations:

  • respectful
  • patient
  • beginner-friendly

Postcards are slow, personal, and human.
Let the community reflect that spirit.

If you’re comfortable, consider making the first move:

  • introduce yourself
  • share why you send postcards
  • or ask something you’ve always been unsure about

Glad to have you here.
Happy posting 📮

Each of these items are for inland use (sent within India) except Aerogramme, which can only be sent outside india.

1. Meghdoot Postcard:

This postcard has advertisement on the left side of the address and it costs ₹0.25 per postcard. It's a prepaid postcard with printed 25 paise (₹0.25) stamp. Prepaid means we don't need to stick any extra stamps, write and drop the postcard in the letterbox. We can write on the back side of the card that comes blank for writing the message. This postcard is subject to availability.

2. Yellow Postcard:

This postcard is similar to Meghdoot Postcard but it costs ₹0.50 and has no advertisement on the address side of the postcard. We have ample of space to write, i.e. left side and the back side of the card. It is a prepaid item with 50 paise (₹0.50) stamp. Its easily available at every post office.

3. Inland Letter Card:

This is a foldable letter and It is used to write longer messages or letters. It costs ₹2.5 per letter card and its comes printed with a stamp, so we don't need to stick any additional stamps. Any enclosure isn't allowed within this letter. Back side is for writing the message, once the message is written, we need to fold twice and glue the flaps. Then its required to write recipient's address, and our address on the other side. This is easily available at every post office.

4. Envelope:

This can be found at every post office and it costs ₹5 per envelope. Its a prepaid like other items and no extra stamps are needed for enclosures upto 20g. If the weight exceeds, extra stamps needs to be applied. Please check the weight of the envelope and then apply the stamps accordingly. Rates for domestic letter is listed in the pinned post of this subreddit. Max allowed weight for letter (envelope) is 500g.

5. Aerogramme:

It's lightweight foldable letter like Inland Letter Card and the only major difference is that it can only be sent outside india. For sending within india, use Inland letter cards that cost 2.5rs. Its slightly larger than Inland card. Aerogramme costs ₹8.5 but to send it abroad, total of ₹20 stamp is required. This means additional ₹11.5 of stamps needs to be applied on it. Enclosure within aerogramme isn't allowed. Letter is written on the back side and its folded twice. At last its flaps are glued. It is subject to availability.

Regular stamps available at every post office in India

These are Regular stamps, also known as Definitive stamps or postage stamps. These stamps are used to pay postage of ordinary post articles like postcards, letters, aerogramme, and others. We don't pay money at the counter to send postcard or letters, instead stamps are bought from the post office and affixed on the top-right corner according to their rates. Once these stamps are applied on the ordinary post items, they are dropped in the red letterbox.

Stamps are available at every post offices. If you want every stamp seen in the picture, you might need to go to bigger post office such as Head Post Office (HO) and General Post Office (GPO). Sometimes certain stamps gets out-of-stock at smaller post offices (Branch Post Office and Sub Post Office). In that case, visit to bigger post office might be required.

There is a value associated with every stamp which is written on either top-left or top-right corner of the stamp. Just like paper money or coin money, they come in various denominations. It available from 25 paise (0.25rs) to 50 rupees. These are regular/normal postage stamps and one can also get philately stamps (commemorative stamp) from Head Post Office or GPO. Its not covered in this post but they comes in different varieties and newer ones gets released frequently. Regular stamps stays the same.

I hope this post helped those who are still new to sending postcards and letters. Stamps is important part of sending them. Feel free to ask any question in the comments.
