Gold chain beyond repair?

My wife's 9 ct necklace (which she really loves) broke while she was breastfeeding and our daughter pulled it. She contacted the maker who said that it looked a little stretched but they would try and repair it if she posted it back and pay a little (£20) for the repair. They did warn that it doesn't always work depending on the condition.
She sent it back and they repaired it. After a couple of weeks of wearing it, when my wife was barely touching it, the necklace broke again.
The maker has said they could try and repair it or she may need a whole new chain for £120.
Just looking for a second opinion - does that sound reasonable or does it sound like the first repair wasn't the best? She's a mum of 2, so a fragile necklace isn't the most practical option!
