Class Fantasy: How to Build?
One of the big flaws of 5e, and by extension BG3, is the lack of options for building a somewhat optimized one-handed longsword fighter/gish who is lightly armored or unarmored. It’s not like this type of hero is some niche class fantasy. It’s one of the most common heroes in movies and other games.
BG2 had the Kenzai and wizards couldn’t use armor. In 5e taking any fighter class means immediate use of heavy armors. BG3 exacerbates this by forcing long swords to be used in two hands without a shield.
Trying to build a lightly armored/unarmored Gish in BG3 wielding a long sword in one hand requires… carrying a torch at all times and mandatory bladesinger build? A subclass which didn’t even exist for most of the game. Plus, not using shadow blade at this point also seems to be a gimp.
I’m a bit puzzled by the lack of a kenzai type of class. Again, this is a very common class fantasy. Probably the most common hero seen throughout fiction - the hero with a one handed sword, no armor, and a little bit of magic on his side.
So how do we pull this build off? I don’t mind using mods to do so. I just want my lightly armored fighter with his long sword, no armor, and a little magic thrown in there. Any help?
PS - I know it’s tradition but for god’s sake couldn’t they have just made Chain Mail AC 4 instead of HIDE ARMOR?? I mean come on. Again, at least if you’re medium armor proficient chain mail would have been optimal, you know, like how every hero in every movie uses chain mail. Not hide armor, whatever the hell that is.
