How much does your first job actually matter?
I have a degree in economics and am currently looking for my first full-time job as a recent graduate, and I’m considering applying also for consulting positions. I quite like consulting as well, but I could also see myself wanting to move into finance at some point later in my career. The reason I’m hesitant is that I’m worried that starting out in consulting could essentially close the door to a future career in finance, since I wouldn’t have any directly relevant experience. So my question would be: how much does it actually matter which field you start your career in? Am I simply overestimating the importance of the first job, and is it still relatively easy to switch fields later on?
