ATO Resume & Application Guidance

I’m looking at applying for some roles with the ATO and was hoping to get a little guidance around resume layout and tailoring.

I’ve noticed that some ATO vacancies don’t include application questions or a separate statement of claims, and seem to place more emphasis on a tailored resume. I’m interested in understanding a little more about how this approach works and what the ATO generally looks for when assessing candidates through their resume.

If you have any advice around preferred resume formats, structure or tailoring for these types of roles, I’d really appreciate any guidance you could provide.

APS6 Career Progression Advice

Hi all, just looking for some career guidance .

I’ve been in the APS for about four and a half years. I started in early 2022 as a labour hire APS3 and secured an ongoing APS3 position after about nine months. After another nine months, I moved into an ongoing APS4 role, and nine months later I was successful in obtaining an ongoing APS6 position.

I’ve now been an APS6 for around two years and am currently in my mid twenties. In my current role, I’ve become the technical lead and subject matter expert for my team. I am also a key point of contact for the work area and have led the redevelopment of our data capture processes and workflows, improving reporting and data collection not only for my team but across the broader branch.

I’m starting to think about my next career step. While I enjoy leading work and improving processes, I’m finding my current role has become a little repetitive. I’m unsure whether I should start applying for EL1 roles or look for another APS6 position to broaden my experience first.

Part of me wonders whether I have enough experience for an EL1 role, despite already taking on responsibilities that extend beyond my immediate team.

For those who have made the jump from APS6 to EL1, or who have been in a similar position, what would you recommend?

Thank you for any advice you can give.
