How are lab/project groups divided?

How many people are usually there in a group for labs, projects, presentations, etc.? There are 74 people in our section, so how would they usually segregate us into groups? Does the group size depend on the type of lab/project, and can the group sizes differ? Would be helpful if someone could share how it usually works.
