MySky Panel Sound Dampening and Storage Mod

The wind noise from my roof cargo rack was pretty bad. I decided to add some sound dampening material to the MySky panels, while also epoxy potting in some threaded inserts for mounting accessories.

I bought a spare set of panels so that I could experiment. Note that these panels were not designed to be load bearing and that anything stored up there could potentially become a dangerous projectile in the event of a serious accident. I wont be putting anything too heavy up there.

I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I installed headliner over the sound dampening material. Gives it a nice finish. I'll try to record some videos of the wind noise at 70mph with the old and new panels. Now that I have an extra set of fasteners maybe I'll make a transparent set of panels.

  • McMaster-Carr 8662K32 1.5" x 3/8" delrin plastic rails.
  • McMaster-Carr 94459A793 M5 heat-set threaded insert potted in place with epoxy
  • JB Weld Original epoxy filling entire panel, 0.5" diameter around each insert
  • SGM Blue 2in1 200 mil (6mm) sound deadening secured in place using 3M headliner adhesive. (jury is still out on whether this is the best option, first time using it).

Easy Fix for Makita MAC100Q Air Compressor Leak

If your Makita MAC100Q air compressor is leaking air through the power check valve during operation, you may not need to replace the entire check valve assembly. You might just have some galvanic corrosion on this pressure relief valve near the tank, preventing it from making a good seal.

Steps to fix:

  1. Locate the brass fitting on the back of the air tank.
  2. Loosen the nut on the black plastic line that goes to the check valve (labelled in 2nd image)
  3. When you remove the nut and plastic line an aluminum part will drop out of the brass fitting.
  4. Clean and polish the wide end of the aluminum fitting to remove any corrosion allowing it to make a tight seal against the black plastic tube.
  5. Swab out the inside of the brass fitting while you have it open. (I also sprayed some WD40 inside)
  6. Reassemble. The check valve leak should be fixed.
