Exchange student heading to Moscow (Sept-Dec) - first time in Russia, need some honest advice on logistics/costs

Hey everyone,

I’m a CS student heading to Moscow this September for a 4-month exchange semester (until late December). It’s my first time in Russia, so I’m trying to get a realistic head start on the daily logistics and routine before I land.

If anyone living there or any past expats could share some practical tips, I’d really appreciate it:

• **Monthly cost:** What is a realistic monthly budget for a student right now (excluding dorm rent)? Just looking for an average estimate for groceries, transport, and a bit of pocket money.

• **Safety:** How is the general safety situation for international students? Are there any specific neighborhoods or situations I should avoid, or is it completely fine to use the metro and walk around late at night?

• **Winter clothes:** Since I'm there from autumn into winter, I'll need to upgrade my wardrobe. Is it better to just bring basic jackets for September and buy the heavy-duty winter coats and boots once I get to Moscow? Any recommended malls or stores that are budget-friendly for students?

• **Apps & Metro:** Besides Yandex Go and Yandex Metro, what are the absolute non-negotiable apps I need to download for daily life? Also, are there any unwritten rules or etiquette mistakes I should avoid on public transit so I don't look like a clueless tourist?

• **Halal food:** Finding halal food is a priority for me. Is it relatively easy to find halal meat/products in standard supermarkets, or do I need to look for specific shops or restaurants?

Thanks in advance for any help :)
