Has anyone actually tried GPS tracker “giveaway” programs for business use? Are they worth it?

I recently came across a program where a SpaceHawk GPS tracking company is offering free trackers to early-claiming businesses (up to a limited number of companies, with no upfront cost mentioned).

It got me thinking; do these kinds of offers actually work in real-world business use, or are they usually just a marketing funnel? For those who run fleets, manage equipment, or handle field operations:

  • Have you ever used free or trial-based GPS tracking hardware from a provider?
  • Did it end up being useful long-term, or did you switch providers later?
  • Any hidden downsides like contracts, data limits, or poor support?
  • Or is it actually a good way for small businesses to test tracking systems before investing?

Just trying to understand if these “free hardware” programs are genuinely helpful or mostly just a lead-generation strategy. Would appreciate any real experiences or insights.

I’m deciding between GPS trackers and simpler Bluetooth tags for keeping track of tools and equipment.

GPS sounds better for real-time tracking, but tags seem easier and cheaper. Not sure which one actually works better in real-world situations. What would you go with?
Thank in advance

I recently tried a magnetic GPS tracker (SpaceHawk) on a truck and trailer at a construction site to see how it performs in real conditions. It was really easy to use; just attach it and go, no wiring needed.

It held up fine over a few days on rough roads, and tracking was decent, but I’m still unsure about long-term reliability, battery life, and performance in tougher conditions. For those who’ve used similar trackers, do they hold up over time, or is a hardwired option better?

Thanks in advance!
