If your on the fence about getting a L2 EVSE...

Edit : Sorry, this wasn't meant to say everyone should install L2, just some info to add to the decision.

This might help...

Saw this article:

https://insideevs.com/news/805275/home-ev-charging-losses-how-to-minimize/

So I decided to ask Gemini :

Level 1 charging (120V) on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 typically experiences a total charging loss of 20% to 30% (meaning overall efficiency is roughly 70%–80%).

By comparison, Level 2 (240V) charging on the Ioniq 5 is much more efficient, with losses generally between 8% and 15% (85%–92% efficiency).

Why Are Level 1 Losses So High?

  • Base Overhead Power Consumption: When the Ioniq 5 is actively charging, its onboard computers, cooling/heating pumps, battery management systems (BMS), and relays stay powered on. These systems draw a fixed overhead of roughly 200 to 400 Watts continuous power.
    • At Level 1 (120V / 12A), total power delivered from the wall is only about 1.4 kW (1,400 Watts). Subtracting ~350W for vehicle electronics leaves only ~1,050W going into the battery—meaning 25% or more of the energy drawn from your wall is consumed just keeping the car awake.
    • At Level 2 (240V / 48A), total power is roughly 11.5 kW (11,500 Watts). A 350W overhead represents less than 3% of the total draw.
  • Longer Charge Times: Because Level 1 charges so slowly, those overhead systems must run for days to deliver a full charge, compounding the cumulative energy lost.
  • AC-to-DC Inverter Efficiency: The Ioniq 5’s internal On-Board Charger (OBC) is designed primarily to handle high-power Level 2 AC input (up to 11.5 kW). Operating the inverter at low Level 1 power levels places it at the bottom of its efficiency curve.

I realize it will take a long time to make up the cost of purchase and installation but if you're on the fence it's something to consider.

Couldn't turn off the car

Was trying to turn the car off yesterday and it wouldn't. Tried with foot on the brake and without (went into accessory mode). Had an update notice that I selected "Later" for because it wasn't a good time to do it. The update window popped up when (I think) it would go from accessory to ready (but not for long and it took a couple of tries to hit the Update button before it dissappeared) so I gave in and let it do the update...car worked fine after that. Was a bit of a "oh shit, not now" moment because I was getting off a ferry and in another country...wouldn't get home for a couple of days.

Exceeded my expectations

Was quite happy with the I5 performance last weekend.  Drove a total of 195 miles and used 58% of the battery (charged to 100% for the first time).  Using this information, extrapolated that the remaining 42% would get 141 more miles.  That means I should have been able to get 336 miles (assuming the battery percent drop is linear).  It was hot so I had the AC on the whole time and it was mainly freeway driving (interstate 5 in Western WA).  I tried to keep my speed at 60 but did 70 now and then to keep with the flow. Hit some stop and go traffic but was a small percent of the miles.

I used ABRP to try and figure out if I needed to stop and charge during the trip.  It guessed I would use 33% on the first leg (actually used 23).  Second leg predicted 32 percent and used 27. There was a third leg but had trouble getting ABRP to calculate the way I wanted to go.

2024 SV+ regen in reverse

Bought it new in 2024 and very recently my wife (I don't drive it) started asking about the regen while in reverse...says it's a lot less all of a sudden. Did a quick search but didn't see anything similar, anyone have the same experience?

Using Android Auto in another country

I'm traveling to Canada this summer (Vancover Island...live in WA state). I have Boost Mobile and plan to add "North America Connect" before leaving which is supposed to enable my phone to work anywhere in North America. Looking for info from people that have done similar and used Android Auto...any issues using it for directions?
