Local 100

I submitted my application recently but got an email saying that they already finalized the selection process for fall semester, and I’ll be considered for next available semester which is either spring ( January ) or or fall ( August 2027 ) …. They also asked if I’m interested in working as a provisional apprentice.

My question is : is it worth it working as a provisional apprentice or no ? Does that improve ur chances of getting selected for the next available semester ? And another question that might seem funny, do the hours you work as a provisional apprentice count towards ur apprenticeship hours in case you are accepted into the program later ?

IBEW aptitude test

Is it worth it to buy The IPREP course to prepare for the aptitude test ?

Or is there another source that I can rely on in my preparation?

I know that there’s no free source where I can find exactly what’s gonna be on the test , that’s why I’m looking to buy the right source.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

Non experienced applicants

Is it true that the apprenticeship program applicants with no prior construction/ electrical experience are never selected even if they do well in the aptitude test and in the interview?

I’ve heard that committee always favor those with prior experience even if it’s only construction experience over anyone else with no experience at all even if they did well in both the test and the interview.

No Construction Experience — Should I Become a CW Before My IBEW Apprenticeship Test?

Need honest advice:

I’m scheduled for the JATC aptitude test in July, and my Local suggested I apply as a CW while waiting.

I’m conflicted:

Should I:

  1. Apply for CW now to get experience, improve my interview chances, and get my foot in the door

OR

  1. Skip CW, focus fully on studying for the aptitude test, and aim straight for apprenticeship

My biggest concern:
I’ve heard that applicants with no construction experience are less likely to get selected, and that committees often favor people with prior hands-on or trade experience.

Is that actually true?

Also — is CW genuinely useful experience, or do new guys mostly end up doing low-pay grunt work with little real electrical learning?

I have no construction background, but I’m serious about becoming an electrician long-term.

For those with IBEW / CW experience — what would you honestly recommend?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
