Advice on Navy Officer Application Essays

I am interested in becoming a Navy Pharmacist Officer after I graduate from pharmacy school. Writing has never been my strong suit, and I sometimes struggle with organizing my thoughts on paper.

From my understanding, the application prompts typically include: “Why the Navy?”, “Why pharmacy?”, and “Why you are a strong candidate?” Are there any other common questions I should expect?

Any advice on how to approach these essays or what to include or avoid would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

HSCP Questions: Statement of Motivation, Letters of Recommendation, and Age Waivers

Hello,

I am currently a PharmD student and recently learned about the Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP). I have already spoken with a recruiter, but I would love to hear from people who have gone through the application process or are currently in the program.

A few questions:

  1. Statement of Motivation I was told that I need to write a Statement of Motivation. Besides explaining why I want to become a Navy pharmacist, what other topics did you include in your essay? What do selection boards seem to look for?
  2. Letters of Recommendation I believe the application requires three letters of recommendation (possibly two from professors and one from an employer or someone who can speak to your character and leadership). I honestly feel a little uncomfortable asking people for recommendation letters. How did you approach your professors or supervisors? Any tips for making the process easier?
  3. Age Waivers Has anyone here gone through the age waiver process for HSCP? If so, what was your experience and how difficult was it?

I am currently serving in the Navy Reserve and will be over 42 at graduation, so I am particularly interested in hearing from prior-service applicants or anyone who received an age waiver.

Any advice, experiences, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Feeling Pressure to Do a Residency. Is It Really Necessary?

I’m a pharmacy student who just finished my P2 year. It seems like everyone is interested in doing a residency or going into the industry, but I’m not really interested in either. I would like to work at an independent pharmacy or in an outpatient hospital pharmacy or mail in order pharmacy. Honestly, I’m just tired of studying right now, and all I can think about is graduating. I’ve shadowed clinical pharmacists before, and I don’t think that’s the path for me.

Is it going to be a problem if I don’t pursue a residency like other students? I feel a lot of pressure to do one because it seems like that’s what everyone expects.
