Hearing loss or not

22M, 187 lbs. About a year ago I developed a very mild noise-induced hearing loss in my right ear (left ear tested normal). I had a hearing test done at the time, and over the following months things improved significantly. My tinnitus became very minor — mostly only noticeable at bedtime — and for the past ~6 months I’ve had basically no issues sleeping. I also became much more careful about hearing protection and regularly used earplugs.
Fast forward to last Tuesday: I went shooting outdoors for probably 5 minutes total. I shot about a full mag through an AR-15 and a mag through a .45 (the other firearms were less concerning noise-wise). Looking back, I probably did not have adequate hearing protection.
What’s odd is that I didn’t notice symptoms immediately. About 2 days later, my tinnitus flared back up and I also noticed some muffled hearing / reduced sound quality. Music and certain sounds just seem slightly “off” compared to normal.
The encouraging part is that the tinnitus has already improved a lot. As of today (Friday), it’s probably the best it’s been since this started and almost back to my previous baseline. What still concerns me is that my hearing overall still feels maybe 5–10% dulled or muffled.
For people with experience around firearm noise exposure, tinnitus, or acoustic trauma:

Can hearing temporarily feel muffled/dulled after loud noise exposure and then gradually recover?

If symptoms are already improving within days, is that generally considered a positive sign?

Has anyone experienced delayed onset symptoms like tinnitus showing up 1–2 days later?
Is it possible for things to worsen later even if there’s early improvement?

Just looking for insight and experiences from others who have dealt with something similar. Thanks.

Question for the gun Experts

I an 22 years old (Male)shot a mag of AR15 and Mag of 45 only that was it, the guns aren’t mine the ear protection they had was shit and trusted what they had there, it was some shitty Industrial headphones that probably reduced it by 15 decibels so it was something, had earplugs I didn’t use which was stupid. Tinnitus didn’t kick in till 2-3 days after the fact, ringing is there and I’m having trouble sleeping and I have some threshold issues it seems, wondering if it will pass eventually hoping it will go away in a month. Just wanted to know what is the likely outcome of it if anyone knows or has prior experience. I’m worried I’m screwed for life, hoping it will heal. I didn’t shoot for long and it was outdoors on grass, hopefully that helped my case a little. Any input is of value.

I also wanted to mention, this was a one time thing.

Problems with my ears after gun range

I’m 22 years old (M) shot 3 guns about a week ago I’m more worried about the AR I shot. Anyway I used ear protection at an outdoor shooting range it probably wasnt adequate enough because it flared up my tinnitus.

The tinnitus kicked in about 2-3 days after the fact which was a little unusual in my opinion Have had problems with acoustic injury in the past because of loud music with headphones but probably made a full recovery with that. Just now this. I shot the guns until they were empty, and it was just for a short duration.

I also forgot to mention that the ear protection was probably fine, I had the ear protection off for a second and someone fired a gun close to me, so I’m trying to figure out if the ear protection sucked or it was the unprotected gunshot.

Where I’m at now, can’t sleep because the tinnitus is loud, seems like it fluctuates. But I wanted to ask the complex question if my ears will be able to heal or not. I’m a week out from when I shot the guns, (a week from today) the hardest days have been Sunday/ Monday. Hoping this is just a threshold issue and my ears will recover.

Tinnitus Again

I’m a 22 year old (M) and About a year ago I developed tinnitus from listening to music too loudly through headphones. It was a really difficult process at first, but over time I improved significantly — to the point where for the last few weeks I was sleeping great and honestly felt almost back to normal. It felt like a success story.
Unfortunately, a few days ago I went shooting for the first time in a while. I used the ear protection they had available, but looking back it probably wasn’t adequate enough for an AR-15. The earmuffs were only rated around 21 dB NRR. I know some protection is far better than none, but I still regret not doubling up or using stronger protection.
What’s strange is that I didn’t notice anything immediately afterward. I slept normally for the next couple nights, but around 2–3 days later the tinnitus came back hard, almost like it did in the beginning. Since then I’ve barely been able to sleep, and it’s been really discouraging mentally.
I’m hoping this is a temporary spike or threshold shift since:
I only shot for maybe 10 minutes total,
I did wear hearing protection,
and symptoms didn’t appear until days later.

I know nobody online can diagnose permanent vs temporary issues, but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced delayed tinnitus spikes after shooting and whether things improved over time.

Also, for anyone who recently developed
tinnitus from noise exposure or acoustic injury: you’re not alone. I remember how terrifying it felt in the beginning, but improvement is possible. I had gotten to a point where I barely thought about it anymore. Right now I’m trying to stay hopeful that my ears and nervous system just need time to calm down again. Please feel free to use the chat as a resource or discuss area I will remain active on this post and thread.
