First Trip -thinking of upgrading
So, over the last extended weekend I went on my first Hammock trip together with a friend and her boyfriend. It was great but cold. 😅. It turns out that the pad which I got with the set was in fact only rated for use above 0C temperatures and is not insulating until 0C. So laying in 4C without any insulation besides a sleeping bag is really cold. I haven’t frozen that much in a long while. Beginner mistake. I know.
I also ended up tumbling over the hammock twice and falling down on the other side. It appears that the side I entered the hammock from had enough tension while the other side I fell out of did not. In the night the left side top of the hammock was on the same high as my shoulder whereas the right side was good 20cm up in the air. Something on the gathered end was not working the way it should for which I also will use this hammock only for my gear in the future.
But I also understood why people recommend a longer hammock. I slept in an 8ft variant these nights and yes there is space to lay in but not much more. So the plan is to upgrade. As I live in Norway I was looking for Norwegian and European suppliers and I will upgrade to NeedForTrees.
Hammock, Tarp, Suspension, Underquilt with Apex200.
Where I am unsure is if I should upgrade to a top quilt as well. I do cabin camping as well where in most cases a sleeping bag is favoured. My sleeping bag is also rated for -1C comfort.
And secondly the extra options for the hammock.
Has anyone with experience used a Top Cover. And can recommend it?
As well as the second layer. I do not own an insulating sleeping pad but I was thinking to still get the second layer in case I want to change to a sleeping pad in the future instead of the underquilt. But I am open for different views.
