College student launching my first app need guidance on trademark, domain, and app store rules in India

Hi everyone,

I'm a college student building an AI-based app as a side project (let's call it Example, hosted on its own subdomain that I already own).

Before I launch the website, Android app, and iOS app, I wanted to get some clarity on a few things I've done some basic reading already (Class-wise trademark search on the IP India portal, App Store/Play Store naming policies), but wanted real experience from people who've actually shipped and listed apps:

  1. Could my current brand name lead to trademark conflicts even if I haven't registered it yet?
  2. Is it worth changing the name/domain before launch if there's any risk, or is that overkill for a small side project?
  3. Do Google Play or the App Store actually reject apps over naming/trademark issues, or is that usually a post-launch complaint process?
  4. Should I file a trademark before publishing, or is it fine to wait until there's real traction?
  5. Is an India-only trademark enough for now, or should early-stage builders think about international classes (like the Madrid Protocol) from day one?
  6. If I already own the domain/subdomain for my brand name, but someone else holds the trademark for that name (in a different or even the same category), can they still force me to take it down or does domain ownership give me any protection at all?

Trying to avoid an expensive mistake early on would really appreciate insight from founders/developers who've been through this, especially anyone who's dealt with IP India or app store rejections firsthand.

Thanks!

College student launching my first app – looking for advice on domains, trademarks, and app store listings

Hi everyone,

I'm a college student building an AI food tracker as a side project. Let's say the app is called Example, and I own the domain example. app.

Before I launch the website, Android app, and iOS app, I have a few questions:

  • Could using Example or example. app lead to trademark or legal issues?
  • Should I change the brand name or domain before I launch if there's any risk?
  • Can Google Play or the Apple App Store reject my app because of the name?
  • Do I need to register a trademark before publishing, or can I wait until the project starts growing?
  • Is registering a trademark in India enough for now, or should I think about international protection from the beginning?

I'm trying to avoid expensive mistakes early on, so I'd really appreciate advice from founders or developers who've gone through this process.

Thanks!
