What is the true role of colour in salamanders?

It is said that the colours of spotted salamanders serve as a warning that they are poisonous. However, they are primarily nocturnal animals, and at night their colours are barely visible to potential predators.

So what is the real purpose of this yellow colouring? Is it a remnant from a time when salamanders were more diurnal?
