Lateral help
Hey yall, I have seen a few people mention this but would appreciate any help. I cannot surf/side skate after 1.5 years of playing derby, and the only way the coaches on our league teach laterals involves that skill (I think some people call it a toe glide?). I have told them I am not able to and have not been given any alternatives. When I try to surf skate, I am able to do it on one side for about 2 feet before ending up in a circle, and my hips are really tight despite stretching them. I have my own way I’ve kind of figured out, but this all has made me really insecure and frustrated - the feedback I get is that I am not remaining completely square/front facing. I am somewhat embarrassed to ask others on the league if they have this issue and everyone I have asked seems to be able to surf skate, but any advice on alternatives or how I could communicate with my teammates/coaches would be appreciated.
