I have been trying for some time to crochet a rectangle, which will then be used as the base for a cuboid amigurumi I am making.

I have tried a range of rectangle patterns, but none of them seem to work. I'm an intermediate crochetter who understands how different stitches work but I just can't get my head around a rectangle. My latest attempt is based on the crochet rectangle pattern linked in r/crochet. Picture is attached after 3 rounds and it's incredibly wonky, any idea what I am doing wrong? I have had similar results for other patterns.
