To me it’s the departed, Matt Damon’s death at the end.
It completely change the meaning of the original story. In the original HK version, infernal affair, the direct translation of the title would actually be “eternal hell”. It is a Buddhist term, shows “it not the dead who suffer, hell is a mindset belongs to the living”

In the original version Matt Damon’s character got away clean, however he lost his father figure and his fiancé (who also learned about the truth). Suffers in “eternal hell”.
