Same Incrediballs, different results

Same Incrediballs, different results

All four of these Incrediball hydrangeas get the exact same water, sun, and nutrients. They were purchased from the same nursery and planted at the same time. They are about 8 years old.

Why don’t the middle two plants ever get bigger? They stay this small year after year, while the outer 2 plants flourish and grow bigger each year.

What’s wrong with this Incrediball?

A portion of the branches have sad, droopy, small, discolored leaves, mostly on the left side.

I checked about 4-5 of the branches for vine borers tonight, and there is no sign of it (all the inner flesh is a healthy color, spongy, no holes or signs of larvae).

None of the leaves are bundled up around the bud like Leaftier would suggest.

(These two pics were taken at different times of day, which is why the first one looks a little droopy overall in the sun/heat of the afternoon. The second picture was a couple hours after it had been watered. It perked up a bit, but those sad looking leaves and branches are still there on the left side of the plant).

Leaves and stems are droopy. Soil feels somewhat moist, but not sure if I’m assessing that correctly since I’m new to this.

What say ye, berry experts or the internet?
