A client asked for a "small favor" because we knew each other. Then expected unlimited free work.
I do freelance graphic design, and every now and then someone I vaguely know reaches out. A former classmate messaged me asking if I could make a simple logo for their new business. They admitted money was tight and asked if I could "help them out." I liked the idea, had some free time, and agreed to do it for free.
The first draft came back with "just a couple of tiny changes." Then another list. Then they wanted different fonts. Different colors. A completely different concept. Then social media banners because "it should all match." Then business cards. Every time I'd mention that this was getting way beyond what we'd originally discussed, they'd say, "Come on, it only takes a few minutes for someone who knows what they're doing."
The final straw was when they asked if I'd also make updates "whenever needed" after launch because I'd already created the files. I told them I'd be happy to continue, but from that point on I'd be charging my normal rate. They got offended, said I clearly didn't care about supporting small businesses, and told a mutual friend I was greedy.
Doing someone a favor doesn't mean you've signed up to become their unpaid employee.
