Experimental: Pushing Spectra 6 — Standard WF vs. Accelerated WF with Ripple

Tested on a 28.5" Spectra 6 panel. This is an experimental accelerated version of our WaveMorph refresh effect.

There are still trade-offs in color gamut(loss a lot) and panel-to-panel consistency, so this is for laboratory testing only and is not used in our production products.

And yes, the recent work from Modos / TICKEY definitely gave me some pressure — and inspiration. 😄

I still haven't found a good reason to use accelerated refresh for the main InkJoy Frame experience, though. For the main image, we still prefer to prioritize image quality.

We may eventually use it for interactive UX, such as Wi-Fi setup or other UI interactions, where responsiveness matters more than maximum image quality.

What makes color e-paper actually look good? A Workshop about Spectra 6 / E6 experiences

I’ve been invited by the ePaper Industry Alliance(EPIA) to host an industry discussion workshop on color e-paper image quality at 2026 ePaper Innovation Conference in China.(https://www.epaperia.com/News/3785.html)

The guests will include the software lead from M5Stack, the open-source author of ZYNQ_eink_controller, and a professional E6 solution provider. There will also be hundreds people from across the e-paper supply chain at the event, including panel, module, solution, hardware, software and application-side companies.

Before the event, I’d like to hear from people here who have actually used, built with, or experimented with color e-paper, especially Spectra 6 / E6.

The main question is:

What makes a color e-paper image look “good”?

Not just technically correct, but good to look at.

A few things I’m curious about:

1. Accuracy vs. visual appeal

When a photo can’t be reproduced accurately on e-paper, what do you prefer?

Should the rendering try to preserve the original colors as much as possible, or is it better to adjust the image so it feels more pleasant on the display?

2. Colors the panel can’t really show

For example, if a very saturated pink or magenta doesn’t work well on the panel, what should happen?

Should it be desaturated, shifted toward a color (such as red) the display handles better, or adjusted based on the overall image?

3. What kinds of images usually look bad?

Portraits, pets, landscapes, comics, artwork, product photos, UI graphics — which ones tend to fail on color e-paper?

Examples are very welcome.

4. If you’ve worked with Spectra 6 / E6

What was the hardest part when you first started?

Was image processing a big hurdle? How long did it take before you got results you were happy with? Was anything unexpectedly difficult?

5. If you could improve one thing

What would you most want to improve about color e-paper image quality?

I’ll collect some of the feedback from this thread and bring it into the discussion. The goal is to bring real user and developer experience into a room that will also have many people from the industry side.

There are no right answers here. I’m mainly interested in real experience:

What looks good? What looks wrong? What still bothers you about color e-paper today?
