Restore replication sub datasets

I have just managed to setup a replication to a remote TrueNAS, seems this was successful. I’m looking wondering how I could restore this data in future if needed.

In my main TrueNAS box the datasets are setup as follows:
- Pool_Name
- Parent_Dataset_A
- Child_Dataset_A1
- Child_Dataset_A2
- Parent_Dataset_B
- Child_Dataset_B1
- Child_Dataset_B2

I have created just one replication task selecting Parent_Dataset_A and Parent_Dataset_B and enabling the “Recursive” option.
I can see that all has been replicated to the offsite TrueNAS box, including the child datasets. Good.

With this setup there is a way to restore only one of the child datasets?

I see in the replication task there is a Restore button, but this does not allow to select which parent or child datasets to restore. I have the impression this would restore both Parent_Dataset_A and Parent_Dataset_B and all the child. This doesn’t seem to be a great option as it would need to download a lot of data, when I might need to restore only one child datasets.
If I want to be able to restore each child dataset individually do I need to create a replication task for each Child Dataset?

OpenVPN client on TrueNAS

What options are there nowadays to run a OpenVPN client on TrueNAS? Is there any App for this?

My understanding is that the OpenVPN service was removed starting from 23.10 (!?!).

I’m building a minimal TrueNAS box to be located at a relative’s house for offsite backup (via replication), and I would like this to connect as client to my existing OpenVPN server at the primary location.
As I already have the OpenVPN server running and in use for other scopes I want to avoid another type of VPN solution (e.g. Tailscale).
As this is at relative’s house I would like to avoid another separate firewall/VPN box. I could run Proxmox on the box I’m building with one VM for pfSense creating a site to site VPN, and a second VM for TrueNAS. But this seems a bit over complicating things…

[W] [US-TX] 2x 3.5in SATA HDD 2-4TB

Looking for two identical and healthy 3.5” SATA HDD between 2TB and 4TB, for a basic TrueNAS build (offsite replication).

I could consider larger than 4TB if the price is really good.

Houston area.

Hardware recommendation for offsite backup

I would like setup a second TrueNAS box at some relatives house to backup (via ZFS replication) the critical data from my main TrueNAS CE box (4x 4Tb drives in Raidz1).

The main requirements would be:

  1. Reasonably small box and quite
  2. At this time the amount of critical date I would like to backup is ~600Gb, but I would like to plan for at least 1Tb and maybe possibility to grew even more
  3. The hardware needs to be sort of reliable as this will be installed far away and I will be visiting every several months.

What hardware would you recommend for the remote box to backup to?
I originally thought at SFF Optiplex, but then realized they can fit only 1x 3.5” drive… How bad would it be to have only one drive to the data pool?
