Sorry for the low-quality photos. I’m away and my parent’s android photos don’t seem to retain their quality when sent to my iPhone. I previously planted some natives at my parent’s house a month ago, and the red columbine was blooming when I first bought it and before I left for my summer work out of state about 2 weeks ago, they were done blooming (as expected) and looked perfectly fine. In the span of 2 weeks, the columbine has withered away and looks really unhealthy. We have had some pretty bad heat but they’ve been watered relatively frequently. They were the “little lanterns” cultivar (I wanted to get the wild type but these were available and looked the closest to the wild type). I wonder if because that cultivar is made for unusually large amounts of blooms, it expends all its energy on that and quickly declines after blooming? For what it’s worth, there are many seed heads. There are some chipmunk holes but they seem to avoid the roots themselves.

I guess all I’m asking is that is this normal for red columbine in times like this? Does it being a cultivar with heavier blooms impact that?
