1916 bearish on RM
Starting at 14:30, Tim Mosso and Josh Thanos discuss RM. Their view is that RM’s star is waning relative to other independents where 1) there’s a clear watchmaker leading the brand and 2) there’s clearly time and craft spent on hand finishing each watch.
Thoughts?
I do think RM more recently has been smart to get back to their roots making “racing machines for the wrist.” There’s no more random celeb collabs like the Pharrell Williams or Jackie Chan on the current catalogue. Those were shameless cash grabs. It’s now mostly back to being high-functionality, cutting-edge engineering and material science focused pieces.
That being said, collector sentiment is fickle. It would be interesting to see how RM can adapt to changing collector taste without losing sight of what the brand represents.
I don’t have the right answers but as an RM fan and owner, I hope Richard, Alex, and the rest of the team are paying attention.
