Advice on a campaign I'm creating for my players.
I'm going to be a dungeon master and I've been trying to come up with ideas for a campaign. This will be everybody's first campaign.
I'm thinking that this campaign would be centered around a corrupt government within the city that slowly gains strength throughout the campaign. The players will not be told this.
It's a 1920's New York style massive city. I'm talking like country size because I want the campaign to mostly take place inside of this city. The city is kind of circular because I want the closer you get towards the center the more powerful the magic users and richer the people will become so they'll start on the outer edges where the more poor weaker people are, then towards the center where the rich and powerful are. Magic is becoming more commonly available through a company that acts as a teacher for wizards. The terms are they get basic magic and the company will drain some of their power, this keeps the wizards weak while the company takes some of their power. The city is filled with magic users because of this company, and the people who are at the top of it are extremely powerful from the wizards tributes.
There are churches that has one god that is extremely popular in only this city. It enforces the idea to buy into this system of supporting the stronger people in the city so they can better defend it. The god is a person that will not be revealed until later in the campaign, and is also the main villain at the center of all of this.
The main villain is a 400+ year old human that long ago tried to obtain immortality. He was infamously known in his time as someone who wreaked havoc across lands, destroying villages and stealing the bodies of the ones he killed. After he was through with a village, no bodies would be found, there were no remains, just empty. This is because he'd harvest every part of their bodies, especially species that lived longer so he could try to live longer himself. He wound up appearing as a disgusting monster that was an amalgamation of different parts. He was unable to be fully defeated, so he was kept contained in a certain area. This area was known as a dead zone amongst people other than followers he had accumulated over time. He had no physical form at this point but was more of just a presence amongst the land, influencing people to do what they are told, coming to them in dreams as angels, promising them generational wealth for the price of luring people into the area and taking what they could until he gained his physical form. His name eventually forgotten and the city slowly built while he was in the background, growing more and more powerful. I'm thinking the way he gets the city bigger is widening the area he is contained in, thinking it'll be too strong to completely break but weak enough for him to be able to push it outwards.
Eventually, he will gain a physical form during the campaign, appearing as their god. I'm thinking he will be put together with his body while the players are there trying to stop it from happening, when he comes back it'll look as if the area was struck with a meteor, the night sky turning from pitch black to a glowing yellow, and he will descend upon them with long flowing golden hair, golden armor (which I will design to look more intricate and I already have ideas), a golden crown practically glowing with how many gems it's filled with, and a red cape. That would be the end of that play session, then my players would come into the next play session working as soldiers under him as they slowly remember who they are and what happened. I haven't figured out much past this point.
Could this maybe work? Any tips appreciated i've never really written a story for people to just play around in that's gonna be this big
