Juvenile Asian Ant Mantis (Odontomantis planiceps)

Odontomantis planiceps is a small mantis, with adult size ranging from 1.4 cm for males and 2.0 cm for females. It is commonly called the Asian ant mantis because it exhibits batesian mimicry in its juvenile stages, resembling black ants - most notably from the 1st to 3rd instar at which they are most vulnerable from predators.

Odontomantis planiceps is completely black from the 1st to 3rd instar, with green bands at the edges of every thorax segment.

After molting to the 4th instar and up to its ultimate molt, they are mostly green with some variation in colour depending on the vegetation in which they reside.

The dihydrogen monoxide parody involves referring to water (H2O) by its unfamiliar chemical systematic name "dihydrogen monoxide" (DHMO) and describing some properties of water in a particularly concerning manner.

The motivation behind the parody is to play into chemophobia, and to demonstrate how exaggerated analysis, information overload, and a lack of scientific literacy can lead to misplaced fears.

GEORGE TOWN: One person was killed in a fire that broke out at the former Odeon Cinema building along Penang Road here tonight.

It is understood that the building, which currently houses the Midnight Black nightclub, was closed for renovation works.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah confirmed that one person had died, believed to have been trapped in the blaze.

"We can confirm that one person is dead," he told the New Straits Times when contacted.

It was reported that a fire broke out at the former Odeon Cinema building along Penang Road tonight, sending firefighters rushing to contain the blaze at one of the state's most recognisable heritage landmarks.

Meanwhile, the Penang Fire and Rescue Department's operations centre said it received an emergency call at 8.50pm.

Firefighters from the Lebuh Pantai fire and rescue station, assisted by personnel from the Jalan Perak, Bayan Baru and Paya Terubong stations, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The first fire engine arrived at 9pm and found the blaze involving a two-storey shoplot measuring about 15m by 91m

Initial assessments indicated that about 50 per cent of the building had been damaged by the fire.

Firefighters are carrying out containment and extinguishing operations with assistance from supporting units.

A total of 25 personnel, including supervising officers, are involved in the operation, supported by six fire engines, an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit and an Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP).
