My housemate won’t allow my boyfriend to stay over. Can my landlord tell me off/kick me out if I let him visit?
Location: England, Cheshire, UK
I (26F) am a renting a 2 bed property from a private landlord and have lived here for 3 years. My house mate (50F) has been renting the other room for 1 and a half years.
About 13 months ago, my long term partner has unfortunately went into her room (with boxers on) whilst he was sleep walking. He didn’t do anything, he just stood there until she screamed him awake and he then obviously left.
His sleep walking condition was something I had informed her about when she moved in, and I had even put a lock on her door to ensure no accidents. He’s never hurt anyone or actually done anything, he just gets up and goes walk about.
After this incident, he attempted to apologise as he felt terrible about the situation. She refused to talk to him and spoke to me instead.
She messaged me saying the situation had left her feeling uncomfortable, and she told me I’m not allowed to have him stay the night anymore. I understand the situation must have been scary for her, having a tall man standing at the entrance to her bedroom, so I told her id make sure he doesn’t stay the night again, but reminded her about the lock and that she knew he was a sleepwalker when moving in.
Last night I had my boyfriend over at the flat. Not to sleep over, but I had missed sitting in a living room with him (he lives in a flat share and the living room is ALWAYS being taken up by the others so there’s never room for us to sit and watch telly). My boyfriend has avoiding visiting my flat since the incident months ago as he still felt guilty (even though he understands it wasn’t really his fault)
My housemate came home and I heard her slam her door. I didn’t think anything of it and he left about an hour later. I then get texts from her saying she is still traumatised over the incident and that “hearing his voice” is triggering for her. She then went on to say “ I am not saying I am afraid of him as a person.” But is saying I’m not allowed to have him here at all if she is here. (She is always there because she doesn’t work much).
I understand her being with him not sleeping over, so I’m not going to change that, but I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s not allowed there at all as is it isn’t my flat. I’ve offered to have us stay in my bedroom but apparently the sound of his voice is too much for her…
So here’s where I need legal advice. Is my landlord legally allowed to kick me out if I have him visit me and that’s causing my housemate to feel uncomfortable? If she complains is he allowed to say my boyfriend isn’t allowed to visit anymore?
I’d understand if it was something very serious but I feel like 13 months is enough time to understand it was a genuine accident and she could have locked her door like I suggested she does when he stays over.
