Are Etickets objectively worse than paper tickets?

I feel like Etickets have really gummed up the whole system. Previously, you'd buy your ticket, and then the conductor would come, clip it, and be on their way. If you lost it, you lost it: you didn't have your travel papers and I feel like less people argued about it.

Now, I try to pre-empt the conductor, but I never time it right and the rail operator's app is so slow! They have to stop for 30 seconds to a minute while I load my ticket if I haven't timed it right (and then also my Railcard if they want that. That app is less slow, but still slower than just me showing them a card.)

This might just be me, but I feel like more people argue about Etickets as well. If you have bought a ticket, and your phone is out of charge, obviously you can't produce it but you do have it. Clearly that's not an acceptable excuse (just like "I ate it" would not be an acceptable excuse for not producing a paper ticket).

Are there any train conductors who can weigh in?

Greater Anglia Appreciation Post

Just wanted to post about how much I genuinely enjoy travelling on GA.

Their trains are air conditioned and very pleasant to travel on. Their conductors are pleasant and helpful (since they were brought back into public ownership, you can buy tickets on the trains and they're very happy to try and get you as much of a saving as possible). I had to travel from Ipswich on Friday (I know, the heat, I shouldn't have done, but I needed to) and despite issues from the heat they were excellent.

Even when I have to take a rail replacement, they're generally well organised around it.

So yes. Big up Greater Anglia. You're better than GWR. Just a shame train tickets are so expensive.
