History and versions:

White Pumpkin and Chai first appeared in 2020. According to @melissac video it has always had the same scent notes of

I love her description of White Pumpkin and Chai as sophisticated, warm, and November coded. She says the 2022 version is a bit more caramel to her nose.

Can I say I appreciate White Pumpkin and Chai more knowing that its last body care iteration was four years ago in 2022.

Pumpkin Picking: the first version?

According to some people in the comments though, White Pumpkin and Chai actually began as Pumpkin Picking which some say is the same scent. The scent notes for Pumpkin Picking from Queen of the girl geeks blog are:

> “Cinnamon-Spiced Cider, Fresh Pumpkin Pie and Hayrides to the Patch.”

The note of cinnamon cider is the most similar. I think the Pumpkin Picking scent notes does make the scent sound more gourmand to me.

I just got White Pumpkin and Chai (2026 version) today but it does kinda remind me of pecan pie. It is a more gourmand scent than I anticipated: the opening does kinda smell like chai but also mixed with like deep rich warm apple cider (not the sparkling kind, the one from a farmers market jug that’s brown) with caramel. And dries down to something that reminds me of light maple syrup or glazed pecans.

Interestingly Pumpkin Picking debuted at the same time Bonfire Bash (which we have again this year!) made its first appearance in fall 2018. As well as Autumn Nights. From this Melissa C video about all pumpkin scents

Best label?

I appreciate the 2020 label because the scent does smell like a glowy, warm orange color to me too. Though I do like the sophistication of the white packaging in later years.

I’ve heard the white Pumpkin and Chai scent is also related to the White Pumpkin home care scent as far as fragrance. So a similar packaging makes sense too.

Actually I do really like the 2026 label with the orange pumpkins giving a hint of what the scent smells like. So cute.

White Pumpkin & Chai

I was searching for a nice pumpkin scent… I think I would say White Pumpkin & Chai is the most pumpkin actually. But it is kind of like a pumpkin pecan apple scent, kind of maple? Like the lighter scent of natural maple syrup vs the heavy scent of like a corn syrup maple syrup. I don’t really know why people say this scent is so light or unsmellable or like nothing… it is distinctly syrupy to me? Surprisingly the warmest of the bunch.

Jack Skellington

Maybe Jack Skellington is the next pumpkin-y… I wouldn’t have thought so since it doesn’t have pumpkin in the name (But he is the pumpkin king). And also didn’t strike me as very pumpkin-y… but it is a different pumpkin, like a vegetal pumpkin like slightly roasted pumpkin seeds plus smoke.

Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte

Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte: a different scent than I imagined. It is much less marshmallow than the pocketbac. The pocketbac reminded me exactly of Peepin It Real marshmallow almost to the same degree of marshmallow. The mist does dry down to a familiar marshmallow like Peepin It Real but much more subtly, like a suggestion rather than a dupe. It is toastier. And there’s also a note in the beginning that reminds me a little of Dark Kiss. I found that the notes used to include raspberry, which is also in Dark Kiss (“raspberry noir” I think).

Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte extended notes:
> Top Notes: White Ginger, Sheer Jasmine, Raspberry Nectar
> Mid Notes: Pumpkin Latte, Toasted Marshmallow, Fresh Nutmeg
> Dry Notes: Creamy Sandalwood, Praline Musk, Warm Vanilla

Anyway, the mist of Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte is related to the pocketbac but much less sweet. I find White Pumpkin and Chai actually has a similar level of sweetness as the MPL pocketbac but of a different kind, not marshmallow-y.

Bonfire Bash

I wasn’t really excited about this one because I smelled Aries from Zodiac and thought it reminded me of Vanilla Romance at the time. Yes the smokiness level is similar and there is some similar cashmere note. I was surprised though Vanilla Romance is much more ginger-y and perfumey. I don’t think they are that similar now… I do think Vanilla Romance is the more interesting scent. But Bonfire Bash is very well blended and balanced and not super sweet. It is a smooth scent where no one note sticks out. Just rounded and even.

If you like Vanilla Romance and want something in a similar family, but without the spice and sweeter because of marshmallow… Bonfire Bash is nice and think could appeal to most people. It’s not super smoky, it’s not super sweet. Probably would be very easy to layer with. I’m a little unexcited about it still. But I think it’s very wearable and more my speed more than Warm Musk (too warm) or Peepin It Real (too sugary but fun).

Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin

Somehow I do still quite like this one even more than others I got. I do hear and understand the “smells like cleaner” allegation… but it’s still pleasing to me.

I also feel like this scent has apple in it. And i think Jack Skellington does too. Plus white pumpkin and chai lists “cinnamon cider.” So I think it probably would layer well with other pumpkin scents with apple.

Overall

Have I found my perfect fall pumpkin scent? No… I feel like the ones I got are maybe better for layering than wearing alone. But there are some nice scents here. Think White Pumpkin and Chai is underrated?

I like how these four are like not super sweet… I thought marshmallow pumpkin latte would be the sweetest like the pocketbac. But for me it’s actually white pumpkin and chai… marshmallow pumpkin latte is sweet in like a fluffy way. Strangely I do get a lot of that raspberry noir type scent from it. It is probably the scent that is the least like its name. Except it does smell like marshmallow eventually.

My favorite is probably sweet cinnamon pumpkin (I know yes yes it’s unpopular) and white pumpkin and chai. Bonfire Bash is good, a nice comforting scent though probably overhyped. But pleasant and I recommend it.

Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte, I don’t quite understand it yet. But it is pleasant, nice. I just am not sure why it is a raspberry note but that doesn’t make it bad or anything since it’s not an obvious raspberry. Maybe like a scent that is just a very slight hint of the raspberry noir Dark Kiss, Blush Cardigan or Into the Night. I don’t mind it.

@marialovesfall says we could be getting an online preview for the new everyday luxuries tomorrow Tuesday. And we could see them in stores September 14th. Exciting!

- Midnight Rouge: looks like a new standalone signature fragrance with body care, candle and hand soap. New bottle shape! Does that day 8 oz? It looks a bit smaller. Maybe it’s just shorter and wider? The price is $18.95.
- Orchid Effect: I thought we would be getting faceted caps like Very Violet for these but it looks like it’s the regular smooth ones?

There is a comment saying what the scents are dupes for. Agree? Marialovesfall had said she thinks Orchid Effect is Gucci Gorgeous Orchid and Trace of Blue is Dolce and Gabanna Light Blue.

First look at Midnight Rouge in the 3 wick candle by @entermpear on instagram. Coming for fall 3 (late September?)

Scent notes are:

Bright pear, jasmine absolute, amber musk.

The fall product guide says it will be coming in stores in body care, candle and hand soap.

Has anyone gotten to smell this one yet? The scent notes are unexpected given the name (“rouge” means red in French, or is a word for blush?). Does it smell red?

Most excited for A Thousand Wishes Granted flanker!

It does appear BBW wants to exit kitchen and laundry categories because of the complexity of production and low percentage of total sales (1%). It’s been noted BBW has said they wanted to exit laundry before and it hasn’t materialized. Even BBW did many more scents? I guess we’ll see what happens there.

I am betting the kitchen stuff will clearance with winter SAS though. It never fully made it to stores.

I saw in a comment in this sub the four new everyday luxuries drop might be in late September (September 21 or 28). As LITP mentions though the conference call host says there was five everyday luxury planned but only four listed in the leaked product guides. Which is the fifth one?

I did hear that BBW has shut down some mall stores and have opened up new ones primarily off mall. I think there has also been new international stores? It was stated there is 1900 BBW stores, which seems to be around 1800 US ones, around 100 Canada ones.

Looking at google the summary says there’s over 500 international stores also. And over 600 partner stores with Ulta. I think there is also around 600 college campus stores if I’m remembering correctly.

But anyway the number of stores was mentioned relating to how it’s a slow roll out to make changes. I forget in what capacity but there was a major store refresh in July I believe?

My takeaway

My takeaway is that the BBW execs are holding true to the new CEO’s vision and will give it a fair shot. This year is considered an investment year. I think the main voice on the call (who was it? The CEO?) said that the strategies they have employed so far have created a positive movement but not enough yet to bring the company into growth. The execs remain dissatisfied with where the company is but willing to continue to rebuild its “equity” by having less promotions in general, about the same amount that is occurring now.

The main guy speaking said that the main area he wanted to focus the company in is in “digital sales.” He said that there has been a 4% increase in digital sales. In my opinion probably owing to how an increasing number of returning and brand new scents are online only. But also they did say that they had reached out to thousands of influencers too which I assume helped.

They did touch upon Ulta and Amazon. Said that I think the Amazon store has only like 10% of their catalog? And they have a percentage cap on how much product they are shuttling there so as to not cannibalize their own stores.

By the sound of it BBW means to continue what they have been doing for semi annual sales. They plan to continue to buy inventory for sale. I’ll assume this means more bring backs? They acknowledged that inventory for summer SAS was low, implying also they did not get as much revenue as usual. But also that this was foreseen and a trade off they expected and accounted for.

BBW did get a tariff refund. Was it $250 million? This was an amount that they tried not to factor into their forecast last quarter but did end up happening.

It did appear that BBW did not want to look ahead as much this conference call. At least not state figures. But by the sound of it they are where they expected to be this quarter and appear to be following through with their vision for the year.

There wasn’t any mention of the backlash following the limited nature of the nightmare before Christmas collection. It seems they didn’t notice. But there was an acknowledgment of a “strategic reduction” of the Halloween collection. And honestly a pleased tone.

I think it’s interesting timing how the conference call occurred August 26th and most of Nightmare Before Christmas collection was sold out and taken off website by August 24th after being released for about a week (August 16/17). It does seem as though the collab was timed with the conference call in mind perhaps. At least I know I would’ve done that.

Many of us have wondered why did BBW shoot itself in the foot with nightmare before Christmas with launching with sold out products from the previous day’s preview. But maybe it was about the new CEO making a statement to the company and to the customers more than anything.

The slogan “consumer first” was said often during this conference call. But the meaning becomes less and less clear. Because to me it definitely appears that BBW is reorienting itself to put the company first. Or the CEO putting his vision first. Maybe it was a calculated shock?

To be honest I don’t see that as a bad thing for BBW to be BBW first if the company is in a downcast state. Better to have less sales than no company. I think the Villains line did prove that customers actually do want to feel some urgency of products running out as a marker of quality and value. Otherwise customers seem to lose interest quickly and also appreciate the products less if they are staying on the shelves due to overproduction. To me BBW went too far in the opposite direction for BBW causing too much scarcity. But I think they did successfully send a message. If it was just about sending a message, I hope the next drop is more balanced with supply & demand.

I do find the “consumer first” slogan vexing given how the Fruit Fusions line had kind of weak scent and fall 2 fragrance loads have only seen modest improvements. Perhaps the changes for fall 1 was more impressive.

There does seem to be the intention to keep fruit fusions around. I don’t understand why they didn’t bring fruit fusions to Ulta if they were going to partner with them. I guess I haven’t felt the need for a permanent spot of fruity scents at BBW. But I don’t mind because I have been enjoying the banana blend lotion actually. I just don’t feel like the line overall is that impressive to be permanent? If there was a difference in formula it was slight.

BBW had their earnings call today August 26th. I didn’t attend but was looking at their presentation for their call.

We see some new possible everyday luxury collection packaging maybe? Unless it’s just a mockup. Not sure since Orchid Effect appears in both an aqua color bottle and a pink color bottle which isn’t usual for the colors to change.

There does seem to be a new A Thousand Wishes perfume planned in a dark purple liquid. I did hear from the last earnings call a couple months ago that they were planning to give A Thousand Wishes the “icon” treatment. I wondered if that meant with a second flanker scent like happened with Japanese Cherry Blossom. And it seems so! Does anyone have more information?

Was finally able to get in store and smell fall 2 that released earlier this month (August) and also today.

Some thoughts:

Fall 1:

- Vampire Blood: finally decided to give it a try… hate that the liquid is red (I fear staining). But yes it’s a pleasant scent.
- Ghoul Friend: surprisingly this was the strongest and most projecting of everything I sprayed. Wow! I returned my Ghoul Friend last year because it did remind me of strawberry gummy snacks clashing with florals. Maybe the blend is better this year. Still unsure about the scent though. I think I did like it though.

Pocketbacs:
- Pumpkin Carving is actually an amazing body care scent. It is what I want from a pumpkin scent. Strongly scented too!
- Cotton Candy Cobwebs smells better to me than Cotton Candy Clouds. Wish they made bodycare.

Pocketbac holder:
- Fortune teller pocketbac holder retails $12.95 so I wasn’t going to get it. But it was like $2.50 yesterday with a glitch I took advantage of. Yes the line down the middle does make it look like a butt. Wtf BBW. But I like the hands which I heard glows in the dark! Mh store actually had a ton of this one left.

Fall 2 (part 1 - early August)

- Wild Blackberry Jam: hmm so this one reminded me of the way that Sweetest Song is bright and musky. I think I was expecting something more mellow like Blackberries & Basil. It’s pleasant but I think the brightness of it reminds me of the cheerfulness of spring and summer rather than the harvest feel of fall. The notes are right up my alley so I may have to revisit.
- White Pumpkin & Chai: people have been saying Jack Skellington from Nightmare Before Christmas is a better version of White Pumpkin & Chai. I suppose they have a related smoothness. But to me they are not that comparable with Jack Skellington being darker and having a lot of other notes. I’m still testing Jack to see if I like it. But on first impression think I prefer White Pumpkin & Chai?
- Whipped Honey & Vanilla: maybe it is a little less candle like than last year. I could revisit this one. It seems airier and I am a florals fan.
- Champagne Apple & Honey: might be stronger this year?

Fall 2 (part 2 - late August)

Nightmare before Christmas:
- Sally (Nightmare Before Christmas): actually I think the mist and the pocketbac sanitizer I had of Sally is the exact same which doesn’t always happen. I blind bought the pocketbac, liked it, and hoped the mist would be similar and it is. Except I think the strength is pretty much the exact same too. I think the strength is ok, not particularly strong or weak. The base notes of patchouli (?) lasts a long time. I found out one of the notes the perfumer behind the scent added was peach. And I can definitely smell it. Yes it smells kinda like peach and dirt. But I kinda like it? An odd mix that resembles the odd character it’s based on. Like spring and fall happening at the same time.
- Jack Skellington: my store had no mists left besides the tester though there was like ten of the Sally mist remaining. Jack was definitely the favorite there! But yeah to me Jack is just kinda missing something like a note that stands out. When I layer it with Leaves pocketbac which has a lot more fall spices (like clove) it does start to make more sense to me. I have been wearing Jack this week and I will say it does project and lasts a while even if in a medium way. I don’t agree with people saying it’s a light fragrance. I did smell it slightly on my skin the next day.
- the display: I guess my store is in not such a popular area because it did have some stuff. Wasn’t bare.

Aromatherapy:
- Vetiver (aromatherapy): I blind bought this one and exchanged it for eucalyptus + tea. Actually it smells amazing but it does also smell on the masculine side. Personally I think it would be amazing on a man. Do recommend! I might try it again if the dry down is different. But on initial spray I did think cologne. Very nice blend though.
- Sandalwood: I thought this one would be boring and I thought I would dislike it like Coastal Dreaming. But actually it is pleasant? I think it has some kind citrus note in there and maybe like a bit of smoke too. Reminds me of the scent that Lost in Santal was duping but softer. I think there is more than just sandalwood going on and it is nice.
- eucalyptus + tea: this is pretty much like their Eucalyptus aromatherapy that discontinued with summer SAS. But with like a dry down of a tea note similar to White Tea & Sage. Like a eucalyptus tea with a bit of citrus perhaps lemon. I do think this is better than Eucalyptus because it has more dimension with a very eucalyptus opening and a more distinctly different dry down (tea). Some people will think “didn’t we just have this scent” on first spray but the dry down is different.
- Black Chamomile: this scent was very popular last year and sold out relatively quickly. I like this one a lot better than Black Tea because it is not sticky sweet syrupy smelling (to me) like Black Tea was. This is more fresh and herbal. Kind of a related tea note as Eucalyptus & Tea. I think Black Tea lovers won’t have a replacement in Black Chamomile since it’s not a dark pungent scent like that one is. But it does have some depth so they might like checking it out anyway with different expectations in mind for something more delicate in mind. But still a little moody for fall.
- Special note: the aromatherapy perfume mists do feel kinda sticky on my skin similar to body sprays that say they have less alcohol in them. I’m not such a big fan of the feel but I guess I don’t mind after a while.

Scent lab minis:
- Soft Oud: this one definitely is reminiscent of Oud Suede (online exclusive). I was wary of trying this one out since I’m not sure I’m the biggest oud fan after trying out Oud Suede which is actually a nice scent (though not sure it’s for me). I heard Soft Oud was different which is why I checked it out. I think for me they are not different enough. But if you like one you’d probably like the other. If you want a sense of what Oud Suede smells like, Soft Oud is a very good example. I don’t know what the exact differences are since I didn’t spend much time with Soft Oud. But those are my first impressions.
- Manuka Honey: ok so this one reminds me a lot of Cashmere Glow we had for Summer SAS bring back. I think more so in the dry down. I think they are different enough to own both. Manuka Honey is missing some of the notes of Cashmere Glow and also does smell more honeyed with a hint of lemon too. I do think I like it better than Whipped Honey and Vanilla. Does it actually smell like manuka honey? I want to say not super similar. But anyway I don’t think it’s the same as Honeycomb from wellness last year which I wasn’t a fan of. Who knows though—haven’t smelled that one in a while. Some people are wary of the lemon in Manuka Honey but personally I like it and the bit of florals. Think it makes it more well rounded.
- Juicy Fig: yes this is a punchy fragrance also like Wild BlackBerry Jam is like someone said. But I think I might like Juicy Fig better. I don’t agree about it being one note… I do think it has dimension. It reminds me of how Viva Brazil was punchy but also had a creamy note in it (the guava). Except Juicy Fig is fig (also a bit earthy like the guava in Viva Brazil). I think this scent would’ve done well in the Fruit Fusions line. It is like a summery take on fig that gives a bit of tropical vibes somehow (the nectar?). Maybe it’s actually like fig plus coconut milk and something tropical fruit punch-y. I expected more of a fall fragrance but I like this anyway and would get a full size.
- Matcha Milk: so the strawberry in this one reminds me a bit of Neopolitan Ice Cream from summer. But it dries down to a sweetened condensed milk sort of fragrance like Milk from wellness line maybe. Someone was asking about matcha Kit Kat bars. I think matcha Kit Kat bars are more matcha flavor than Matcha Milk. But maybe there is some similarity in the syrupy kind of scent that starts to remind me of a thick milk or a white chocolate kind of scent. I wanted more of a cold foam matcha kind of scent. Or a very grassy ceremonial matcha scent. I think this Matcha Milk is ok. It does smell more accurate to the inspiration than Pink Matcha Latte does to me, which smelled more like body care/body lotion and less edible. I don’t think Matcha Milk is leagues ahead, but I think a lot of people would prefer Matcha Milk in a side by side.

Pocketbac:
- Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte: saw the body mist dropped online so wanted to smell it via this hand sanitizer in store. Wow it’s actually lovely? Smells like what I thought white pumpkin and chai would smell like… it reminds me of sweetened milk tea with spices. If given the chance I’ll definitely pick this one up.
- Leaves: this is definitely Michaels home goods store in the candle aisle. Much more than Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin is. But I actually love it. A potpourri scent that also smells dewy and refreshing to me.

Overall thoughts:

- I am pretty disappointed that the new in store drops was pretty much just aromatherapy and the scent lab minis. While there was four new mists online (like marshmallow pumpkin latte). But I do like what was released in general and don’t think there’s any duds. Though some scents may feel a bit familiar. While others are pretty new. Anyway I do prefer the versions of these scents over other similar ones released recently (Manuka Honey & Matcha Milk over Whipped Honey & Vanilla and Pink Matcha Latte).
- Between the body mists and pocketbacs I am starting to feel fed for fall. Kind of a shame some more fall coded scents are pocketbac only for the pumpkin and spice lovers.
- I do like Sally, though I get why she’s unpopular since she has a deep earthy scent that kinda smells animalic. I feel like the perfumer tried to convey the character though. And the peach note makes me smile. I actually don’t really get much berry scent at all from Sally though.

I think Amber Suede is very underrated. Glad it’s back. It’s a warm amber vanilla type scent that is unisex. Love it! Reminded me of some of the base notes of Belle without the florals and a little less sweet.

I think there’s also suppose to be Black Chamomile and Eucalyptus Tea coming out for fall 2 soon right? Has anyone seen those in back stock? Wondering will it come out Monday (August 24)?
