I woke up shaking from a dream about a train station that sells years instead of tickets, and I can’t shake the ending
It's my first post here, but this dream felt so tactile and bizarre that I need to write it down before the details fade.
It started on an underground platform that felt like a mix between a cathedral and a subway terminal—high arched ceilings made of dull, brushed copper, completely silent except for the low hum of electricity. There were no tracks, just a sheer drop into pitch-black fog, and a line of antique brass turnstiles stretching into the distance.
Everyone in line knew what to do except me. Above each turnstile was a small display, like an old digital alarm clock, showing a countdown.
When a woman ahead of me reached the scanner, she didn't insert a ticket or tap a phone. She placed her palm against a frosted glass plate. The machine chimed, and a low mechanical voice announced: "Payment accepted: Four years, seven months."
Instantly, her skin tightened, a strand of gray hair slipped into a deeper charcoal, and she stepped through looking perceptibly younger, lighter—almost glowing. The train hadn't arrived; stepping through the gate seemed to be the entire point. People weren't commuting; they were trading remaining lifetime to undo the physical wear of living.
When my turn came, I hesitated. The gatekeeper—a man with completely blank, mirror-finished glasses—asked without looking up, "Deposit or withdrawal?"
I looked at the glass pad. Out of instinct, I asked what my balance was.
He tapped a key. The display flickered, then showed: 00:00:00.
I said, "That makes no sense, I’m still standing here."
He finally tilted his head up, looked right through those reflective lenses, and said very calmly: "You already traded the rest to remember this part. The train isn't coming back."
Right as he said that, the fog in the drop below began to rise like freezing water, and my alarm went off.
I’ve been sitting with my coffee for an hour just staring at my hands. Dreams usually dissolve five minutes after waking up, but the exact sound of that mechanical chime is still stuck in my head.
Help me to understand it...
