yall need to read

Students who are looking to apply in the next admissions cycle and beyond, please pick up reading as a hobby, it will save your ass in the long run. I’ve spend a lot of time reading supp apps for peers, and I’ve realized that nobody knows how to write. It’s genuinely alarming how many STEM students are functionally illiterate, like yall know you still have to write even in engineering right?? I’ve heard so many people asking how to get better at writing—I’m not joking, just READ. How else are you going to build vocabulary and learn to write narratively? How else are you going to make your writing more expressive? The artistic aspects of writing STILL MATTER in your applications; if your flow is shit your application will be weaker.

I know it’s a hard time to start now, but you need to figure out what works for you. Listen to audiobooks, go to the library, find a genre you like, play with a fidget while you read to stay simulated, PLEASE please please just find a way to at least like reading a little bit. I cannot have another year of supp apps that sound like “My name is John. I did a club. It taught me leadership.” I am begging yall on my knees READ FOR FUN
