Books about the "Other America"?

250th anniversary celebrations got me thinking about America. And my favourite Youtube channel, Tale Foundry, got me thinking about the Other America. In the video of the same name, our Taleoid posits the idea that what the forests and mountain depths represented in the folklore of the ancients (otherworlds filled with wonder and horror), gas stations and factories reflect in our modern, urban world. He recommended online horror stories like Alice isn't dead and Left/Right game and now I'm asking for books with a similar premise. Which books have you read that lead into Other America?

What fantasy worlds best utilize technological progress?

Stories in which we don't have a medieval world that, after a time skip, suddenly has factories and steam powered engines. A world where progress of technology is a major subplot, if not the main one. Can you think of some stories like that?

How come the Outer Gates didn't fall...

...during the six months Harry was dead? Mab was on Demonsreach, keeping Harry from passing on. And her skinny constitution and the persistent snow in May implied that she didn't move from her vigil. And Lea was torturing poor Molly every damned day, or at least often enough that she wasn't at the Outer Gates.

And yet, Cold Days makes it clear that Mab or Lea have to be present at the Outer Gates of the Outsiders will break in. How come they didn't need to this time?

Are there any short story ideas you would like to see?

I would like to see Michael slaying Siriothrax and meeting Charity. I'm sure that would be something. How about you?
