UQ extension request submitted ~11 minutes late after the 24 hour window — is there any point appealing if I have limited evidence?
I’m a UQ student and I’m currently freaking out about an extension request for an assessment that has a hurdle requirement.
I submitted my extension request at approximately 24 hours and 11 minutes after the assessment deadline, so technically I’m outside UQ’s normal 24-hour window, and was rejected.
I’ve been reading UQ’s Assessment Procedure and I’m confused about how much discretion there actually is.
Clause 55 says an extension request must be submitted no later than 24 hours after the assessment due date/time.
However, clause 59 says that requests received after that deadline must include evidence explaining the reason for the late request and that a decision-maker determines whether to accept the request for consideration.
The bigger problem is evidence. My circumstances were genuinely affecting my ability to function and complete the assessment, but I don’t have much contemporaneous evidence. I eventually obtained a medical certificate, but it was obtained after the assessment due date. Clause 66 says documentation obtained after the due date may be accepted in exceptional circumstances if sufficient explanation and evidence is provided, but I’m worried that I simply don’t have enough evidence to meet that standard.
The relevant grievance policy also says students can appeal a decision if they provide new/additional information or can substantiate that the original decision didn’t comply with UQ policy/procedure.
I’m trying to figure out what the sensible approach is:
- Should I contact UQ Student Advocacy/SHOC now, before a decision is made?
- Should I also contact the Course Coordinator?
- Or should I simply wait for the extension decision and only approach SHOC if it’s rejected?
- Has anyone had experience with a UQ extension request being accepted despite being slightly outside the 24-hour window?
- Particularly interested in experiences where the student had limited evidence or medical documentation obtained after the due date.
I just want to understand realistically what options I have and whether an appeal is actually worth pursuing if the initial request is rejected.
I’m also trying to stop obsessing over this shit and actually finish the assignment 😭
TL;DR: My UQ extension request was submitted ~24 hours and 11 minutes after the deadline, so technically 11 minutes outside the 24-hour window. I have a medical certificate, but it was obtained after the due date and I have limited other evidence. The request was rejected. UQ policy says late requests can be considered if there’s evidence explaining the lateness, and adverse extension decisions can be appealed through the grievance process.
Should I contact SHOC/Student Advocacy now, contact the Course Coordinator, or wait for the decision and appeal if rejected? Has anyone had a similar UQ extension request accepted?
