Advice on finishing Oak Hobby Board

We had to open a doorway up a bit and had to replace the perpendicular board that was there previously. Our contractor added the Oak Hobby Board but it feels raw and unfinished.

It’s rough to the touch. I know he sanded and stained it (although I may want to stain it darker).

What’s the game plan to have it match the shiny and glossy finish of our current hardwood and to ensure it’s protected? Our home is 100 years old and I have no idea the type of wood in the rest of the house or the type of poly that was used previously.

Aware we also need to fill in the gaps with filler.

TYIA!!!
