Another Manga translated: Roro is an Overprotective Dragon

Hello!

Something a bit off topic

While we're on break this week, I spent some of my summer vacation translating another giantess comedy manga:

Roro is an Overprotective Dragon!

If you enjoy my translation of Giant Ojou-sama, please check this manga out too! I had a lot of fun working on it, and I hope you'll enjoy it as well!

And for those who already knew about Roro and have been waiting for more—don't worry! I'm planning to translate Volume 2 too, which will complete the entire series!

Noa coloured in by me

In my free time I colour in manga panels, and always thought Noa deserved some colours. And last night I finally did.

Behind the Scenes: How I Translate Giant Ojou sama

I thought I'd share a little behind-the-scenes look at how I translate Giant Ojou sama as a small thank you for all the support you've shown my translations!

The original raw panel

The first step is transcribing the Japanese and translating it:

なにOKってことなの!? それはもうどこまでOKなの!?

This is also where I pay attention to word flow, grammar, and sometimes a little localization.

For example, the direct translation:

"What exactly is OK here!? Just how far is this OK!?"

became:

"What exactly is OK here!? Just how far does this go!?"

I kept "OK" instead of changing it to "okay" because it makes Oriko B's rambling feel more natural. She also loses a tiny bit of her usual posh, formal way of speaking here, so I wanted the English to reflect that.

These are just a few of the thoughts that go through my head while translating and localizing.

Outside of this panel, there are also things like each character's unique way of speaking and Japanese terms that don't have a direct English equivalent. For example, "Ojou-sama" isn't really a term we use in English, so I have to get a little creative. Some translators keep it as "Ojou-sama," while others adapt it into English. There isn't really a single correct approach. It's always a balancing act between preserving the original and making the dialogue read naturally.

Starting the clean progress

Next comes the cleaning. If I'm lucky, it's as simple as painting the text white inside a speech bubble. But sometimes the Japanese text overlaps the artwork, so I have to redraw those parts by hand. I try my best to match the original art style, though I'm definitely not an artist myself. It's something I improve at every chapter.

Luckily, for cases like the double spread in Chapter 168, I know some talented artists who are happy to help. So always check the credits page for everyone who contributed. :)

JP text be gone!

The result is a clean panel that I can then ruin with English text! (Ignore the imperfections... ignore the imperfections.) You may also have noticed that I sometimes use the cleaned artwork for colorings.

Voila!

And finally, we arrive at the finished product: a clean, translated panel in English!

Thank you all again for appreciating my translations. I've been doing this for almost a year now, and I genuinely love reading every comment I receive. Your support really keeps me motivated to continue!

Oh! I almost forgot one of the most important steps: proofreading.

A huge shoutout to u/golfenmeister, who proofreads every chapter. After I've finished translating, we go over the dialogue together, discussing wording, punctuation, and whether a sentence flows naturally in English. Sometimes we'll spend several minutes debating something as small as a comma or exclamation mark!

It's a part of the process that's easy to overlook, but it makes a huge difference. Having a second pair of eyes catches awkward phrasing, typos, and helps make the final release read as naturally as possible.
